AUGUST 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA August is one of my favorite months, not only because of the beautiful late summer weather, but also because it marks the return of the Minnesota State Fair, which is truly a feast for the senses. TPT’s booth is at the corner of Underwood and Lee, and we will offer a slew of fun activities and games for children, as well as meet & greets with Daniel Tiger and the team behind "Almanac." Stay updated with all of our “Great Minnesota Get-Together" plans on TPT.org/events. We can't wait to see you there! August also marks the beginning of our late summer pledge drive, an essential time for us to engage with both new and loyal members. This year, we are featuring "The Best of the Joy of Painting: Special Edition," where the iconic and soft-spoken Bob Ross completes his beautiful "Home in the Valley" painting and offers a glimpse into his painting techniques. Another must-see is "Great Performances: Rodgers & Hammerstein's 80th Anniversary: My Favorite Things." This star-studded concert features Aaron Tveitt, Patrick Wilson, and more, performing from the impressive repertoire of these musical theater pioneers. In addition to these shows, we are thrilled to premiere "Paul Hollywood Goes to Hollywood." The famed judge from "The Great British Baking Show" hits the road on a custom Harley Davidson to explore food and film along a 3,000-mile road trip from New York to Los Angeles, dishing with celebrity friends along the way. It’s a culinary adventure you won’t want to miss! As the back-to-school season approaches, it always brings a sense of nostalgia. In this issue of the magazine, we feature an interview with Kristin Pedersen, our VP of Lifelong Learning, who shares her exciting vision for amplifying TPT's long tradition of quality educational programming for people of all ages. Her commitment to bringing our vibrant local storytelling to life beyond the screen is truly inspiring. None of these amazing programs and initiatives are possible without your generous support. Thank you for being a part of our community and for your unwavering commitment to TPT. Here’s to a wonderful August filled with fun, music, and learning.

Learning at the Center Discover more about TPT's new Center for Lifelong Learning BY KEVIN YANG

Did you know that when Twin Cities PBS began broadcasting on television nearly 70 years ago, education was the focus of our very first program? In 1957, Twin Cities PBS made history when we premiered a science education series called "Exploring Science." This program, hosted by local Saint Paul science teacher, Bill Schrankley, would be the first of many educational television programs produced during the early years of our station’s history. Fast-forward 67 years, and our work in educational programming continues to make history. Whether it’s through programs like “Hero Elementary” focused on early learner science and literacy, activities like Don’t Believe the Hype that foster media-literacy and identity development skills for high-schoolers, or adult learning experiences like the mental health initiatives that supported the TPT-produced, nationally distributed film “Facing Suicide,” TPT keeps our tradition of exemplary education programming alive through our work for learners of all ages and subjects. Announcing the new Center for Lifelong Learning: This upcoming back-to-school season, Twin Cities PBS is excited to introduce the Center for Lifelong Learning. No, we aren't constructing a new education “building” at TPT – but we are building a new foundation for how we engage with our community at all ages and all stages, using the wealth of education resources we create.

We’ve seen discussion guides and curricula for programs such as “Jim Crow of the North” utilized in college classrooms and corporate employee groups. Tangible impact from past initiatives such as the Emmy Award-winning documentary, “The Forgetting: A Story of Alzheimer’s” and other multigenerational programming have highlighted the importance of engaging learners of all ages. Whether it’s through sharing media and igniting discussion in settings for older adults, helping HR professionals employ TPT content in lunch-and-learn settings, or exploring opportunities to partner with community education sites, TPT’s lifelong learning efforts will intentionally extend to community members outside of our usual K-12 age range.

There are three goals at the core of this new education-centered vision:

Expanding Our Audience of Lifelong Learners: Learning is a lifelong process. We love creating resources that teachers and students in grade school can use, but we also know that our work brings great educational value to our older viewers.

Sharing Resources in a Digital World: Broadcast television is not the only way our

Join Us in Celebration! Twin Cities PBS’ exceptional education programming may be nothing new, but with an ever-changing media and education landscape, innovation and evolution are necessary. Looking towards the future, our new initiative will deepen our impact as we build our community of learning. Whether it’s watching one of our new shows on TV, downloading a classroom discussion guide, exploring our new website, or saying hello at one of our family events, we invite you all to join us and celebrate the new Center for Lifelong Learning at Twin Cities PBS.

community engages with our programs. With an extensive track record of providing greater access to our resources through a variety of platforms, we are launching a new website, TPTLearn.org. This one-stop shop for educators and anyone who enjoys learning allows users to explore our media and its aligned resources, as well as learn more about TPT’s upcoming community events. In addition, we will continue to create and upload curriculum onto PBS LearningMedia, an online platform where teachers can find free and standards-aligned resources from PBS stations across the country. Whether on-air or online, making our education resources easily accessible across many platforms will be a continued priority for our station. Engaging with Our Community: We know our impact is greater when we meet our community where they are. Building relationships with like-minded community partners is central to this strategy. Partnerships with libraries have been essential to the success of “Book Drop,” a new digital series that combines STEM and literacy skill development through read-alongs by STEM professionals. Teaming up with parks and recreation departments throughout the metro area has helped the TPT Learn Academies initiative reach over 8,000 students at our after-school events. Expanding library-based programming that welcomes families and all-comers, such as our Summer STEM events and Minnesota State Fair presence, will also continue to be an important way for us to meet our community. We look forward to deepening our relationships with partners that make our work with the community possible and look forward to building new connections.

Youth Filmmakers Explore the Lasting Impact of Gordon Parks’ “American Gothic” BY DEMETRIUS TRUNDLE

Ninety-eight years after Gordon Parks first arrived in Saint Paul, Minnesota’s youth are still walking in his footsteps. Students from TPT’s youth media program Don’t Believe the Hype had the opportunity to work on and star in a new film project called “Gordon Parks’ American Gothic: Liberating the Voices and Visions of a New Generation”. As crew member Darius Smith noted, Parks' American Gothic photography series encompassed more than just the photo of Ella Watson in front of the American flag. In his desire to show Mrs. Watson as a complete person, Parks spent weeks with her and her family. During that time, he photographed Mrs. Watson at home with her grandchildren and adopted daughter, as well as at church where she served as a deaconess. Parks also photographed members of Mrs. Watson’s community, including business owners, children, workers and other folks living life in our nation’s capital. This past January, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) opened an exhibit featuring these and many other photos taken by Parks during his apprenticeship with the Farm Security Administration in the summer of 1942.

Led by HYPE Executive Producer and grandniece of Gordon Parks, Robin Hickman-Winfield and the HYPE crew had the opportunity to visit the “American Gothic” exhibit at Mia. A small TPT film crew accompanied them on their trip to document their experience, thoughts and interpretation of “American Gothic” and the themes of Community, Faith, and Labor seen in the collection. The result is a 15-minute documentary that shows an inter- generational conversation between Gordon Parks, Ella Watson, Ms. Robin (as the HYPE crew affectionately calls her), and members of the HYPE crew. On June 20, 2024, “Visions and Voices” premiered at the closing celebration for Mia’s “American Gothic” exhibit. The HYPE crew were joined by friends, family, museum goers and TPT staff to screen and celebrate their work. After the screening, crew members participated in a Q & A session with the audience. During the discussion, the impact that Gordon Parks’ work had on crew members was evident: Aketzally Murillo shared that, although she was unfamiliar with Gordon Parks before her participation in HYPE, she now feels motivated to share her knowledge of him with her circle. Damarj Robinson shared that seeing Gordon Parks excel in multiple artistic fields has inspired him to take greater risk in his creative pursuits.

AUGUST 2024

Although the evening was filled with village elders showering the HYPE crew with praise and sage advice, it was the knowledge and wisdom that the HYPE crew shared that truly made the celebration remarkable. From crew member Olivia Moore reminding us all to lead with gentleness in our relationships with younger people to Kevin Pollard encouraging fellow media makers to create from a place of love and authenticity rather than popularity, the words and of these young people make me feel truly hopeful and excited about the future of the Twin Cities. In the words of Gordon Parks, the HYPE crew are armed with their “choice of weapons” to take their rightful place in media and the world beyond.

You can watch the HYPE film “Gordon Parks’ American Gothic: Liberating the Voices and Visions of a New Generation” on the Twin Cities PBS YouTube channel at youtube.com/TwinCitiesPBS.

My Half-Century Attempt to Learn French By Marie Sherlock

Conventional wisdom dictates the best time to learn a foreign language is when you're young, very young, barely-out-of-the-womb young. The malleable brains of children — the logic goes — are quite literally designed to absorb new information (all of that neuroplasticity!). I am decades — many decades — past that blink- and-you've-missed-it deadline. Even my earliest exposure to a foreign language was apparently too late: Junior High French. I contemplated, for a nanosecond, majoring in French in college and that was the extent of my quest for bilingualism. Until retirement. I've traveled to France four times, taken French classes, bought all five levels of Rosetta Stone Français, and I've got the Duolingo app on my phone. I've even participated in a couple of immersion programs.

The first benefit is overall brain health. "Healthier brain aging is facilitated by using two or more languages," notes Marian. The second big benefit is pretty much a corollary of the first: "Knowing more than one language delays Alzheimer's and other types of dementia by four to six years on average," she says.

And yet — I am still monolingual. Oh. Mon. Dieu.

Did I miss the boat?

Thankfully, no. "That seems to be a bias the general public has as opposed to what the scientific evidence says about learning a second language," explains Viorica Marian, director of Northwestern's Bilingualism and Psycholinguistics Research Lab. "It is absolutely possible to learn a second language at any age." In fact, Marian says that older Americans attempting to learn a second language have many advantages over those with supple younger brains. "Older adults are often much more motivated to learn another language especially when they know all of the benefits of doing so," she says.

Four to six years? That’s what the research shows.

"We don't have a treatment for dementia right now," explains Marian, "but we do have intervention lifestyle variables that have proved protective toward delaying Alzheimer's and dementia, things like exercise, level of education, social circles and language acquisition." She adds, "When you learn a second language your brain is constantly working, juggling multiple languages. It's like getting a workout for your brain.”

3 Reasons I Love Substitute Teaching By Amy Nicholson

1. Helping in an important way. Teachers are in demand. News of America's teacher shortage is often in the headlines. This shortage of classroom teachers consequently leads to a shortage of substitute teachers. Administrators often have to step in to cover classes or students will be split among other classes or teachers will substitute for absent teachers during their regular prep periods. It puts a strain on the entire system. That trickles down to the children. 2. It is interesting and fun. As a substitute, every day is different. In the 10 years I've been subbing in elementary schools, I have worked as a classroom teacher and an instructional assistant at every grade level from preschool to grade 6. 3. We all have something unique to offer. If you think you're not qualified to substitute teach because you haven't taught before, think again. Everyone has something to offer. You have life experiences unique to you. Whether it's what you've done, where you've gone, or who you've known, your experiences alone make you one-of- a-kind and, therefore, provide something only you can give to others.

Twenty-one typically chatty fifth graders sit at their desks in front of me, and yet, it's absolutely silent. I stand by the teacher's desk at the front of the room, slowly reading the last lines of the chapter as they read along. One of the main characters has just died. I lower the book and look up. The students look at me. They sit there and I stand there in silence for what seems like quite a while, shaken. Then they start talking. They're angry, they're sad, they feel cheated that the author has taken away one of the characters that they had grown to love over the last 12 chapters and several days. For me, that day was a testimony not only to the power of good books but also an example of one of the ways working as a substitute teacher has blessed me over the past decade.

There are myriad reasons I love my job. Here are just three:
