Police urge drivers to slow down Super speeder stopped A 25-year-old man from Oshweken end- ed up on foot in South Glengarry Town- ship after an OPP highway patrol inter- cepted him racing along Highway 401. The driver was going 166 kilometres an hour in a posted 100-kilometre zone. He was charged with excessive speeding and had both his driver’s licence seized and his vehicle impounded for seven days. The number of fatal accidents in Ontario this year where speed was a factor is al- ready double the number for last year with six months left to go. That has police worried about what the !nal year-end to- tal might be for 2014. The OPP’s provincial tra"c statistics for the year show that the number of speed-re- lated fatal accidents in the province for the past six months is double compared to the same period last year. Speed has bumped impaired driving and distracted driving out of the running for top spot on the accident factor list. “Last year speed was a factor in more than 11,000 collisions we investigated, so there is no question that speed threatens the safety of all road users,” stated Deputy Commis- sioner Brad Blair. During the past six-month period from January to June, fatal accidents on OPP-pa- trolled roads claimed 113 lives. Speed was the primary factor for 33 of those deaths, distracted driving for 24, and alcohol for the remaining dozen. Last year the OPP across the province !led almost 300,000 speeding charges, with close to 3,000 of them involving speeds in excess of 50 kilometres per hour along posted routes. Police urge both speeding drivers to slow down and also that other more responsible drivers report when they see someone breaking the speed limit. An investigation about a !ght has re- sulted in a man facing not just an assault charge but also one for breach of proba- tion. Roch Richler, 52, of North Glengarry Township was arrested and charged July 31 following OPP investigation of an inci- dent the day before around the noon hour on Main Street in Alexandria. Richler and another man were reported as !ghting each other. A police computer check also showed that Richler was on probation and had vio- lated one of the conditions of his proba- tion order. He was released on a promise to appear for the Sept. 3 provincial court session in Alexandria. No contact order ignored A 43-year-old man from South Dundas will be in provincial court in Cornwall Sept. 9 to explain to a judge why he ignored a no-contact order. Police have not released the man’s name. He was charged with failure to com- ply with a recognizance order following OPP investigation July 31 of an evening domestic disturbance incident on Queen Street in the village of Winchester in North Dundas Township. The accused is alleged to have ignored a no-contact order telling him to stay away from his former spouse.
