“Reach for the Star” Walk/Drive-a-thon
The Southwest Virginia Reciprocity Group recently sponsored a “Reach for the Star” walk/ drive-a-thon in Roanoke, Virginia. Right in the middle of Roanoke is a small mountain named Mill Mountain. On top of Mill Mountain stands the largest man-made star in the world: 88 feet tall, made with a metal frame and highlighted with red, white, and blue neon tubes. Consequently, Roanoke is known as “The Star City of the South.” This inspired the idea of the “Reach for the Star” walk/drive-a-thon to benefit P.E.O.’s newest project, the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship. It seems like a natural event: the P.E.O. star, the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship and the big Mill Mountain Star. The stars were coming together! Sisters from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia participated by gathering sponsorships and walking or driving to the star at the top of Mill Mountain. The idea was
to have an event that could include everybody— walkers, drivers, kids, dogs, project candidates and recipients—whoever wants to join the fun. Over the years, some sisters graduated from walking up the mountain to driving up to help with pictures and refreshments at the top, and then ferrying walkers back down to their cars. It has become an annual event P.E.O.s and their families look forward to. In 2021 the reciprocity group was honored and delighted to have four out of five Virginia State Board members and two of their BILs participate in the event. This “Reach for the Star” event has been held seven times since the first time in October 2009, when it was launched. The Southwest Virginia Reciprocity Group are thrilled to report they raised $2,765 for the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship!
