selves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord” (Rom. 12:19). Not only the matter of revenge, but even the very attitude o f anger is to be surren dered : “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice” (Eph. 4:31). The safest rule o f all is this: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2 :5 ). Yield to His sway. Obey His will. “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust o f the flesh” (Gal. 5:16). This is the Scriptural way, and the only way, to conquer anger. Leader’s Helps I. C ostly V engeance The human heart was not made for re venge; for however sweet vengeance may taste at first, it soon turns all to gall and wormwood. When you find people who brood over real or fancied wrongs, you find those who have ruined their health, soured their nature, darkened the very heaven above them, lost the good of life, and spoiled the comfort of their homes. They sank into the habit o f writing on the sands all the favors they received, while they graved all their imagined wrongs deep in granite. Anger against those who harm us, injures us more than it can injure them. Very wise is the poet’s advice, “ Nor be thou rageful, like a handled bee, And lose thy life by usage o f thy sting.” — J am es W ells . II. “ H e H eld H is P eace ” The day when Jesus stood alone And felt the hearts of men like stone, And knew He came but to atone— That day “he held his peace.” They witnessed falsely to His word, They bound Him with a cruel cord, And mockingly proclaimed Him, L ord; “ But Jesus held his peace.” They spat upon Him in the face, They dragged Him on from place to place; They heaped upon Him all disgrace; “ But Jesus held his peace.” My friend, have you for far much less, With rage which you called righteousness, Resented slights with great distress ? Meditation on the Lesson James is the “practical” letter writer. He deals with everyday, ordinary things with which we are all familiar. His epistle does not contain much which is purely doctrinal, but is chiefly concerned with the “ duty” which should always follow doctrine and which can only be fulfilled when it is based upon right doctrine. As we note the striking language in our lesson, we can realize that James has drunk deeply of the teachings o f the books of Psalms and Proverbs; and also of Christ’s teachings. W e hear David saying in Psalm 32:9 : “ Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle.!’ W e hear Solomon saying: “The tongue o f the wise is health” (Prov. 12:18), and, “An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire” (Prov. 16:27). We are reminded also o f Christ’s searching words: “ By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (Matt. 12:37). James presents his teachings concerning the tongue in a series of striking images, the meaning o f which is readily grasped. The apostle teaches that as the strength of horses is controlled by bit and bridle, as the movement o f a ship is governed by its helm, and as a raging flame develops from a mere spark, so great issues are effected by the activity o f that small mem ber of the human body, the tongue. No man is able to tame the tongue. But, glory of our Saviour’s name, “ He is able,” and He is likewise willing. And each one o f us must pray the Psalmist’s prayer if we would be victors: |jj|Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth;. keep the door of my lips.” “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory.” A t Epworth on one occasion, a wagon load o f Methodists were brought before the magistrate. “What have they done?” asked the magistrate. “ Please, sir, they converted my wife. Before she went among them, she had such a tongue. But now she is quiet as a lamb.” “Take them back,” said the magistrate, “and let them convert all the scolds in the parish.”— P ickering . II. O f D oubtful V alue A Christian once said to John Wesley, “My talent is to speak my mind.” “Well, brother,” replied the great preacher, “the Lord would not mind if you buried that talent.”— S elected .
