In April, we organized the AGC’s first annual "We Build Utah Career Fair" at Weber State University, drawing in a robust turnout of aspiring high school students eager to explore opportunities in the construction industry. The event featured an array of exhibitors, including leading commercial general contractors,
subcontractors, and industry service suppliers. Participants had the chance to interact directly with industry leaders, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths and current trends shaping the construction sector. Hands-on demonstrations, informative presentations, and interactive booths provided a dynamic and engaging environment. Students left the event with a sense of enthusiasm for the industry, armed with new connections, potential job paths, and a deeper understanding of the critical role construction plays in Utah's economic development.

NEWLY APPOINTED DFCM DIRECTOR
About Michael Michael Ambre is an accomplished and results-driven project leader with a distinguished career marked by expertise in State procurement, contract administration, various construction delivery methods, and exceptional team performance. As an effective team leader, Michael is dedicated to fostering positive collaborative experiences and recognizes the importance of relationship building. His direct communication with agency directors, department heads, and company executives reflects a commitment to transparent and influential leadership. Throughout his 24-year career in the Division of Facilities Construction and Management, Michael has worked his way from the role of Project Manager to the position of Division Director. He leverages an unwavering commitment to execute innovative tactics. Continuously challenging the status quo, he poses the crucial question: "Is there a better way?" This relentless pursuit of improvement has not only defined Michael's career as a Project Manager, but has also positioned him as a leader capable of navigating the complexities of the division.

MICK THOMAS
NEWLY APPOINTED DOGM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
About Mick Utah Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Joel Ferry has appointed Richard “Mick” Thomas as the new director of the Division of Oil, Gas and Mining. Mick replaces John Baza, who served as the division's director for 18 years and retired after a distinguished 30-year career in the industry. “Mick brings a wealth of technical, regulatory, and industry experience that will help shape the future of Utah’s energy landscape,” Ferry said, highlighting Mick's proactive collaboration with state leaders and stakeholders. Mick most recently served as the division administrator for the Idaho Department of Lands, where he led the mining, navigable waterways, and oil and gas industries. In Idaho, he developed and implemented the state’s regulatory framework for these sectors, advocating for safe and efficient resource development. As the new Director in Utah, Mick is dedicated to ensuring industry prosperity while safeguarding natural resources. He plans to build strong relationships with the governor’s office, legislators, industry, and stakeholders to promote responsible practices that benefit citizens and the state's diverse landscapes. Mick's extensive background includes roles in Hawaii and experience as an operations geologist in the oil and gas industry.

AGC OF UTAH UTAH WORK ZONE SAFETY CONFERENCE

TUESDAY, APRIL 16TH
Participants gained important knowledge from expert speakers and interactive formats. Highlights included understanding risk perception, panel discussions with UDOT, OSHA, and UHP representatives, and a keynote on creating safe cultures. The conference provided a unique platform for attendees to share experiences, learn best practices, and foster connections within the safety community. The AGC of Utah's efforts in coordinating this successful event empowered participants to tackle challenges, mitigate risks, and prioritize well-being on construction projects statewide.
The 2024 Utah Work Zone Safety Conference, organized by the AGC of Utah, brought together over 200 industry professionals for the AGC’s largest safety event. This year we had the most educational sessions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities ever, with a focus on enhancing worker and public safety in construction zones. Key topics included traffic control regulations, risk mitigation, safety leadership, communication, emerging technologies, and stakeholder collaboration.
ANNUAL SAFETY AWARDS This event recognizes AGC member companies' unwavering commitment to safety, honoring their exceptional safety records and innovative programs. All members are welcome to apply for the safety award! Please contact Taylor Smith at tsmith@agc-utah.org for more information on next year’s awards so your firm can be recognized. The AGC Safety Awards program now includes recognition for two components: Safety Record (lagging indicators) and Safety Program (leading indicators), evaluated and awarded separately. The awards are determined using statistical information from the Utah Hours report, OSHA 300 Log, OSHA 300 A Summary, Workers Compensation Loss Run Report, and NCCI report, compared against national averages. Award levels include bronze, silver, gold, platinum, and diamond. Additionally, applicants can earn up to five stars by meeting criteria in categories set by the Awards Taskforce, with each star requiring two criteria from: Leadership & Corporate Commitment to Safety, Record Keeping & Inspections, Safety Climate, Planning for Safety, and Safety Training. It is always a delight when June rolls around. The weather gets warmer, projects are in full swing, and it wouldn't be complete without a round of golf. This year’s summer tournament was sold out in FIVE DAYS and was larger than ever. Golfers enjoyed a beautiful day across five stunning 18 hole courses at Wasatch, Soldier Hollow, and Homestead. The tournament brought together members for a day of friendly competition, networking, and fun. A big thank you to all who attended. A LOOK AT JUST A FEW OF THE COMMUNITY AND INDUSTRY EVENTS THAT THE AGC PARTICIPATED IN THIS QUARTER
AGC President/CEO Joey Gilbert presented a 2024 legislative recap to members of the Salt Lake Chapter of the the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). They then toured the North Capitol Project. WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK

LAW GROUP PRESENTATION
The AGC hosted an event addressing Utah’s recent construction law changes. Attendees explored crucial areas such as revised utility marking and digging protocols, updated crane safety regulations, etc. NAVIGATING NEW CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS
Throughout the year, the Utah Bar Association hosts legal seminars for continuing education and training. At this seminar, Joey presented a legislative recap of what bills and laws were passed during this year’s legislative session and how they would impact the construction industry.

AGC President/CEO Joey Gilbert sat down with the leadership of several school districts to discuss what needs the construction industry has in terms of helping students find their way into the trades. This is just one of the initiatives the AGC is tackling in regard to workforce development.

300-MILLIMETER SEMICONDUCTOR WAFER FAB PROJECT
THE LARGEST ECONOMIC INVESTMENT IN UTAH HISTORY
Texas Instrument’s (TI) Lehi expansion is preceded by a historic $11 billion investment making the 300- millimeter semiconductor wafer fab project the largest economic investment in Utah’s history. The expansion will create an additional 800 TI jobs as well as thousands of indirect jobs. "Companies like Texas Instruments continue to invest in Utah because of our world-class business climate and exceptional workforce," said Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. "TI's new semiconductor fab will solidify Utah as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub for generations to come."

AGC’S INFORMATION OPEN HOUSE
The AGC of Utah hosted an informational open house along side Texas Instruments and the two general contractors leading the project, Austin Commercial and Okland Construction.
Subcontractors who attended learned how to effectively engage with Austin Commercial and Okland Construction, explored opportunities in construction and facility-sustaining services, and gained a comprehensive understanding of the certification processes for minority and women-owned businesses. Additionally, attendees had the chance to network with key decision-makers, industry peers, and potential partners, fostering connections that could lead to future collaborations and business growth.
BUILD THE WORLD GIRLS CONSTRUCTION CAMP

Last month, the AGC of Utah hosted it’s first annual "Build the World" Girls Construction Camp in Salt Lake City and St. George, an inspiring and educational event designed to introduce young women to the dynamic world of construction.
The camp aimed to break stereotypes and empower young girls by providing hands-on construction experiences. Participants engaged in various activities that showcased different aspects of the construction industry, including carpentry, welding, and more. Students worked with tools, learned about safety protocols and were taught the importance of teamwork and precision.

One of the camp's highlights was the mentorship provided by experienced female professionals in the construction industry. These mentors not only taught practical skills but also shared their personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs, offering insights and inspiration to the young participants. The girls had the chance to ask questions, seek advice, and gain a deeper understanding of the possibilities within the field of construction.
The "Build the World" Girls Construction Camp was a resounding success, demonstrating the potential and enthusiasm of young women eager to make their mark in construction. AGC of Utah remains committed to developing the industry’s future workforce and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to build their future.

TAYLOR SMITH Taylor has been the AGC of Utah’s Director of Safety & Education coming up on six years. He is responsible for organizing and overseeing all safety and educational training and classes hosted by the AGC. This past quarter, Taylor organized, planned and saw out the AGC’s annual safety conference. The event was a great success and provided valuable safety insight and collaboration to those in the industry. Outside of work, Taylor enjoys a variety of hobbies that showcase his diverse interests and talents. He loves hiking, reading, and researching family history. In his downtime, you can also find him knitting or cheering for his favorite Premier League soccer team, Aston Villa. Taylor dreams of mastering gardening and aspires to become an amateur beekeeper someday. Taylor’s passion for both his professional and personal pursuits makes him a well-rounded and valued member of our AGC Staff. A little about our Director of Safety & Education
