NEWLY APPOINTED DOGM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
About Mick Utah Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Joel Ferry has appointed Richard “Mick” Thomas as the new director of the Division of Oil, Gas and Mining. Mick replaces John Baza, who served as the division's director for 18 years and retired after a distinguished 30-year career in the industry. “Mick brings a wealth of technical, regulatory, and industry experience that will help shape the future of Utah’s energy landscape,” Ferry said, highlighting Mick's proactive collaboration with state leaders and stakeholders. Mick most recently served as the division administrator for the Idaho Department of Lands, where he led the mining, navigable waterways, and oil and gas industries. In Idaho, he developed and implemented the state’s regulatory framework for these sectors, advocating for safe and efficient resource development. As the new Director in Utah, Mick is dedicated to ensuring industry prosperity while safeguarding natural resources. He plans to build strong relationships with the governor’s office, legislators, industry, and stakeholders to promote responsible practices that benefit citizens and the state's diverse landscapes. Mick's extensive background includes roles in Hawaii and experience as an operations geologist in the oil and gas industry.
