How to Thrive in the New World of Work

May 6th 2021

T H A N K Y O U

Thank you for joining us for the 2021 National

Workplace Summit!

Understanding how to meet the demands of the new

world of work requires knowledge of the trends that are

likely to shape the post-pandemic world, a leadership

model aligned to the moment, and the skills needed to

have effective conversations about racial equity.

What follows are highlights on these topics and more

from speakers Thomas Friedman, Ijeoma Oluo, Malcolm

Gladwell, and Cate Luzio. We hope you find them helpful

as you make thriving in the new world of work a reality.

@TomFriedman

Everything will be fast, digitized, and modular. As a result of this, companies are increasingly going to become orchestrators of this modular work. Your ability to learn and to love learning will be your new pension. That will be the source of your security as an employee going forward. As we saw from strong leaders during the pandemic, demonstrating trust and empathy are essential leadership skills and team performance enhancers.

Be intentional about access to these conversations.

3 .

Know why you are having a conversation about racism.

4 .

Tie your goals to the stated needs of marginalized people, and make sure goals are actionable.

@Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell detailed how leaders can respond to the new paradigm by:

1 .

Aligning leadership decisions to the mission.

Accepting that organizational structures are generational, and the network model is changing worker’s expectations.

2 .

Noticing how team communication has changed while working remotely, and understanding that difficult conversations must happen in-person. Delaying big decisions and nuanced conversations until we can have them face-to-face.

C O N N E C T I N G V I R T U A L L Y R E M A I N S A N E S S E N T I A L S K I L L Cate Luzio’s practical tips for networking virtually include:

@CateLuzio

Think of networking as a way to create conversations or take part in a discussion.

1 .

Use screenshots to go back and review who you engaged with during the conversation virtually, others that introduced themselves, or made comments you’d like to follow up on.

2 .

Be prepared to ask for what you need, be it advice, mentorship, or a connection.

3 .

Follow up. It’s the key to any networking—or relationship building. Review any screenshots that you saved and connect with those individuals on LinkedIn or social media, saying, “we were in that session together. I’d love to connect.”
