The NIOSH Hazardous Drug List
and/or reproductive hazard. Prior NOSH Lists of Hazardous Drugs did not include drugs that only posed a developmental and/or reproductive hazard. This document also notes those drugs with approval under a biologics license application (BLA) and updates the American Hospital Formulary Services (AHFS) classification and drug nomen- clature of various drugs. In addition to these updates, the tables categorizing hazardous drugs have been reorganized and are discussed below. Table 3 of the 2016 List of NIOSH Hazardous Drugs only provided a list of drugs that met the NIOSH criteria of a reproductive hazard (damaging to a male or female person’s ability to conceive or carry to term an offspring) or developmental hazard (able to cause disruption in the development of unborn children including teratogenic outcomes). The 2024 NIOSH List only identifies those drugs that only meet NIOSH’s criteria as a developmen- tal and/or reproductive hazard are identified in the column “Only Developmental and/or Reproductive Hazard” in Table 2. Developmental and/or repro- ductive criteria consists of assessing whether a drug has the potential to cause adverse effects
on sexual function, fertility, pregnancy outcomes or disrupt the development of the unborn child.
Table 4 of the 2016 List of NIOSH Hazardous Drugs provided a list of the drugs removed from the NIOSH List of Hazardous Drugs In this 2024 List, a new section identifies changes to the placement of drugs on the List, includ- ing drugs that are no longer considered hazardous and those that have been moved from one table to another which are found after Table 2. Table 5 of the 2016 NIOSH List of Hazardous Drugs provided information on recommended exposure controls for hazardous drugs based on formulations and has since been removed. Risk management is no longer an element of the NIOSH List of Hazardous Drugs. This infor- mation can be found in Managing Exposures. Previous NIOSH Lists of Hazardous Drugs to include pregnancy categories is no longer available. The NIOSH List of Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings, 2024 contains the name of the medication, its AHFS classification, whether the drug entity has Manufacturer’s Safe Handling Instructions, does it possess a Biologics License Application, and whether it has a IARC or NTP Classification.
