piles, brown pelicans, lava herons, and lava lizards, and the ubiquitous Sally Lightfoots in all their red-orange splendor and their spring-loaded eyes.

The curious lava “benches” that backed up the beach area looked very like wooden structures and the views of the fairly distant mountains and volcanoes behind them were impressive, especially when the clouds rolled in to cover their “cone heads.” The salt air was tangy and the beach quite beautiful with the waves crashing and splashing among the lava floors, pools, “chairs,” and “benches.” The spray kept us all cool and in a frolicsome humor.
