THE KING’S BUSINESS

arjd manner o f all good. Petitions only bring mortals the result o f their own , belief.” “Who would stand before a black board and pray the principle o f Mathemat ics to work out (solve) the problem?” (S. & H., p. 308, 1894, 1899; p. 3, 1916J, “Audible prayef is impressive; it gives momentary solemnity and elevation to thought, but does it produce ( any) lasting benefit?” “ God is not influenced by man” (S. & H „ p. 312, 1894; pp. 312, 313, 1899; p. 7, 1916). “The ‘divine ear’ is not an auditory (auditorial) nerve” (S. & H., p. 308, 1894; p. 313, 1899; p. 7, 1916). “The (mere) habit o f pleading with the divine Mind, as one pleads with a human being, perpetuates the belief in God as humanly circumscribed—an error which impedes spiritual growth” (S. 6 - H., 308/1894, 1899; p. 2, 1916). “The danger from (audible) prayer is that it may lead us into tempta tion” (5\ '& H.i p. 313, 1899; p. 7, 1909, 1916).. How contradictory these statements are to the teaching o f the Bible on the subject o f prayer! How full the teaching o f Jesus was with regard to the privileges and power o f prayer! How often He exhorted men to pray, to call-upon God, to expect to influ ence God by reason o f their faith and per severance in prayer) How often even Jesus Himself prayed and received definite answers to prayer! Rather than prayer leading us into temptation, Jesus Himself tells us to pray, lest we enter into tempta tion (compare Luke 11:1, 18:1; Matthew 26:47; John 17; 14:17; James 1:5, 6 ; 4 :2 ; 5:13-18.) in. I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN SCIEN TIST BECAUSE OF ITS WRONG ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE BIBLE - The relation o f Christian Science to the Bible is quite generally misunderstood. It is ordinarily supposed that Christian Sci entists are devout and diligent students o f the Bible. The fact o f the matter is that they do not study the Bible as it is, but as it is printed in their own text book. A comparison o f the Bible as it is and the

Bible as it is printed in their own text books shows that the text o f the Bible has been changed and garbled. A, lady o f education and culture, who held a- promi nent position in Christian Science circles, •but who, later, seeing the error o f the cult, withdrew from it, told me that the Chris tian Science Bible was really made up o f texts taken from the King James Bible and snatched completely out o f their setting and context. To these verses comments and annotations were added by Mrs. Eddy, which completely changed the sense o f the verse as recorded in the Bible. Is it not a fact that in Christian Science churches while one reader reads from the Bible, the other reads the comments and interpreta tion o f the Scriptures as set forth by the Christian Science text book, Science and Healtht The Bible Is Not the Supreme Text Book in Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy says: “ A Christian' Scientist requires my work Science and' Health for his textbook, and so do all his students and patients. Why? First: Because it is the voice o f Truth to this age, and contains the full statement of-Christian Science, or the Science o f healing through Mind. ¿Sec- ond: Because it was the first book known, containing a thorough statement o f Chris tian Science. Hence it gave the first rules for demonstrating this Science, and regis tered the revealed Truth uncontaminated by human hypotheses. Third: Because this book has done more for teacher and student, for healer and patient, than has been accomplished by other books” (S. &r -H„ pp. 456, 457, 1916). “In this volume o f mine, there are no contradictory statements” (S. & H., p. 291, 1899; p. 29, 51st Ed.; p. 345, 1910, 1916). “A thorough perusal o f the author’s pub lications, heals sickness” (S. & H., p. 446, 1916). “ Neither tongue nor pen can overthrow it” (S : & H., p. 4, 1899, 51st Ed.; p. 110, 1916; cf. p. 110, 1910).
