THE KING’S BUSINESS

Is it not true that though we have so frequently grieved Him and tried Him with our murmurings and backslidings; and like the Prodigal we have wandered away from' Him, yet has He not followed us, and when all earthly wells have failed us, has He not come to our deliverance and opened for us the Rock from which gushes forth the blessed waters o f life? The Israelites were utterly unworthy of the great blessing they received at the hand o f the Lord. And so we Gentile sinners are without the least particle o f merit, just as undeserving as the Israelites of the “water o f Life,” (Eph. 2:1-6). But on the basis o f grace, it is free to us, (John 4:10; Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:8-10). Not only is it free, but it is abundant, qs the text declares. (See also Rev. 22:17; Isa. 55:1). And .as the waters gushed forth at Rephidim, so every Israelite had the life-giving element right at hand. So, in virtue o f work of the One o f whom it can be said was “the smitten Rock,” this water o f Life is free to all who call upon Him, (Rom. 10:8-10). All we have to do is to TAKE .IT. Halle lujah ! since 1893, was a remarkable event in sev eral ways. There was a large gathering o f Mohammedans (Hanamkonda is in Decan, a Mohammedan state), Hindus and Christians in a gaily-decorated tent pitched before the dispensary. Dr. Timpany was presented with a gold medal, silver cup, silver pencil case, and beautifully illumin ated addresses, inscribed on white satin. ---------O----— . A native Christian in Travancore, India, brought a heavy burden to a missionary one day which proved to be a sack contain ing idols. He said that he did not want them any more, but suggested that they might be melted and made into a bell for the church. This was done, and now the dumb idols have found a voice and sum mon worshippers to praise and prayer.— Exchange.

head, has, often caused waters to spring, out o f the Rock in the wilderness places o f our poor lives. To His Name be eternal praises! What a mercy shown the rebellious and murmuring Israelites, when despite the fact o f their trying Him as they did He caused the waters to gush forth in a flood ! But the beauty and sweetness revealed in the story is, that it has the deepest spiritual significance. In 1 Cor. 10:4 we read, “ They did all drink o f that spiritual Rock which followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” “The Rock thajt followed them.” In the case o f the “cloudy pillar” it went before them, when they were sojourning in the Wilderness o f Sin; but in this case it is declared that “the Rock followed them.” Here again His sweet grace and tender compassion shines out with a heavenly lustre. Was it in order that the weak and lagging ones, as well as the strong, in the rear o f the great caravan, might find refreshment in drinking from the rivers of gushing water? How this parallels our own experiences again and again. The first Indian woman who ever appeared before the United States Supreme Court as a lawyer was admitted to practice recently. She is Mrs. Lydia B. Conley, o f Kansas City, Mo., a member o f the Wyandotte Tribe. Hon. John W . Davis, Solicitor-General o f the United States,, and himself o f the finest old Southern Presby terian stock, moved her, admission to prac tice. j,------- O--------- In Tokyo University there are 8000 students o f whom 6000 are said to be agnostic, »1500 Atheistic, 440 uncertain, and 60 Christians. — — O - ------- The occasion o f the leaving o f Dr.' and Mrs. J.
