still further faith that whatsoever He asked o f God, God would grant (v. 22, cf. v. 42). There was even a faints hope that Jesus might raise Lazarus from the dead in answer to Jesus’ prayers. But she hesi tated to come right out plainly' and ask Jesus for this. But Jesus understood her ( v .'23). He always understands our unex pressed longings. He answered, “ Thy brother shall rise again.” Blessed promise, and He is saying it to all o f us whose loved ones have fallen asleep in Him, “thy brother shall rise again,” “ thy husband shall rise again,” “thy child shall rise again.” But Martha was not satisfied yet, she feared that Jesus referred to the general resur rection somewhere away off in the dim and distant future. But Jesus gave her a new and glorious thought about the resurrec tion, “ I am the resurrection and the life.” I f then, we wish resurrection and life, all we have to do is to get Jesus Himself (cf. I John 5:12). Resurrection and life are not the same thing, resurrection has to do with the body, life with the spirit (John 17:3). All men will ultimately receive res urrection through Jesus (1 Cor. 15:22; John 5:28, 29), but only those who believe on Him shall receive life in its truest and highest sense (John 3:36). After uttering His wondrous words, Jesus put to Martha the searching question, “ Believest thou this?” And just so today concerning every wondrous promise that Jesus uttered and which we read in the Bible, He is asking us, “ Believest thou this?” And Martha answered, “Yes, Lord.” Can you answer in the same way? Nor did Martha stop even then, with burning heart and lips she continued, “ I have believed that thou are the Christ, the Son o f God.” Do you also really believe that? It is all important that you should (John 20:31; 1 John 5:1, 5).
