Summer events are in full bloom here in Jackson County and beyond. From events for the whole family to unique art, May has events to keep your calendar full and you entertained. BIRDFEST May 11; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For all you nature lovers, BirdFest is an all-day, free World Migratory Bird Day celebration. This year’s theme is “Protect insects, protect birds,” so there will be a broad offering of education presentations, activities, and nature walks dedicated to the topic. Check out live bird ambassadors and learning opportunities! Enjoy live music, art displays, food trucks, and raffles! GROOVING ON THE GREEN May 24; 6–8 p.m. The Village Green is about to get even greener with its annual concert series starting on May 24. Grooving on the Green is a free evening of great music in a beautiful outdoor setting. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to watch the live bands and enjoy food from local vendors. The Darren Nicholson Trio kicks off this series with their original Americana tunes. ASHEVILLE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS May 25–26; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For the third year, downtown Asheville will transform into a vibrant showing of art and tasty food for the Asheville Memorial Day Weekend Festival of the Arts. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful weather while they stroll through artwork by great local and national artists. From paintings, glasswork, sculptures, and just about every other type of handmade art, there’s something for the master art collector and novice. This free show occurs at North Pack Square, South Pack Square, and the Terrace Lawn and Reuter Terrace. INGREDIENTS

8 skin-on chicken leg and thigh pieces

1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp ground cumin 1 1/2 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste

1 1/3 cups ketchup 2 tbsp brown sugar

Juice and zest of 1 orange Juice and zest of 1 lemon 3 cloves garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS

1. Place chicken in a large resealable plastic bag. Combine all other ingredients in a small bowl. 2. Reserve 1 cup of the sauce and add the rest to the plastic bag. Toss to evenly coat the chicken and marinate overnight. 3. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, add remaining sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer to thicken sauce, about 10 minutes. Set aside. 4. On grill set for medium-high heat, arrange chicken skin side down. Cook until grill marks form, about 4 minutes. Flip chicken, cover grill, and cook until a thermometer inserted into thighs reads 165 F, about 20–25 minutes. 5. Serve with remaining sauce.
