Bulletin Team: Ah, interesting. So, what Buddy Groups does RC Upper Kololo have and what inspired their code names – if there are any? Rtn Rhonah: Rotary Club of Upper Kololo has six buddy groups. The number one Buddy Group is of course Bombardier! The rest are Airbus, Boeing, Chopper, Concorde, and Gulfstream. The code names were clearly inspired by aeroplanes, being as it is that we are very close to the Kololo Airstrip. Bulletin Team: Practically, how do Buddy Groups assist the Club in accomplishing the Club or Rotary International’s objectives? Rtn Rhonah: Buddy Groups help the Club Members to know each other better, so they work together better. Once club goals and objectives are broken down to Buddy Group level, achieving them becomes easier
Bulletin Team: What are some of the memorable times do you remember from being in your specific Buddy Group? Rtn Rhonah: When we were raising funds for Polio through Buddy Groups, I was taken aback by the generosity of the members of the Bombardier Buddy Group and how proactive they were at sending through their contributions. Their Commitment to the eradication of Polio was very evident. I was very proud of them! Bulletin Team: What advice would you offer new Clubs that haven’t considered Buddy Groups? Rtn Rhonah: They should definitely look into creating them. Great buddy Groups will inevitably make a great Club. Bulletin Team: Thank you, Rtn Rhonah for your time and insights.

Bulletin Team: Do you think Buddy Groups cause cohesion within a Club or they cause divisions or thinking/working in silos? Rtn Rhonah: I think they create cohesion in the Club. It is like an inner family of sorts, but the groups are still aligned with the Club goals and objectives. Each Club member gets a circle of people in the Club that will very specifically look out for them, hold them accountable and walk with them the journey of being an effective Rotarian. The new members get a close circle of Club Members to learn from, which I think makes their onboarding process even easier because they get their own little corner of the Club to which they belong.
