Riverside County is a county located in Southern California, bordering San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, and Imperial Counties. It is the 4 most populous county in California, with approximately 8,500 registered business locations, and 159,317 total weighing & measuring devices. This number includes roughly 5,564 locations with commercial scales, and 150 taxi meters / ambulance odometers. Furthermore, there are 628 gas stations, which collectively have around 20,945 devices. The Riverside County Department of Weights & Measures employs 43 inspectors and investigators—21 of whom are women—who work tirelessly to ensure equity for both consumers and businesses. th For many women entering this field, the work presents unique challenges, including physical and mental. Carrying heavy weight kits, maneuvering large fuel-testing equipment, and handling enforcement situations require strength, confidence, and technical knowledge. At first, I questioned whether I belong in such a field, but through training and experience, I develop the skills necessary to thrive. Throughout my career, I learned that one the most significant challenges women in Weights & Measures face is overcoming stereotypes. When conducting inspections, we are sometimes met with skepticism or assumptions that we are new to the job, less qualified, or incompetent simply because we are women. Some business owners have attempted to direct their attention to male colleagues or question our authority. However, with confidence, knowledge of regulations, and professionalism, the women in our department have consistently proven their expertise, earning the respect of industry members. Despite these challenges, being a woman in Weights & Measures also provides opportunities to showcase a unique perspective. Women are often praised for their attention to detail and ability to multitask—skills that translate seamlessly into precise measurements, thorough inspections, and accurate reporting. These qualities ensure that businesses are following regulations and that consumers receive fair treatment. Beyond their technical skills, women in the field also bring a balanced and thoughtful approach to problem-solving. When dealing with frustrated business owners or consumers, many find that a calm and patient demeanor helps ease tensions. The ability to listen and educate—rather than simply enforce—goes a long way in fostering understanding between regulatory agencies and the public.
