While the musical was a lot of fun, Mr Chambers says there was still a serious underlying message. “The Prohibition era was a pretty lawless time and despite it being turned into entertainment in Bugsy , we have to remember these were, after all, tough gangsters,’’ he says. “In real life, each pie would have represented a bullet, and each splurge gun represented a machine gun. Hundreds of people died at the time, but so many times in modern media we gloss over the political, social and sociological issues of the time.”
“At the end of the production, I said to the boys that if they had been one of the people who had helped solve a problem, to have found a solution to a challenge whether it was theatrical, technical or organisational, then they were the sort of people who would thrive in the industry.’’ David Chambers
