Year 13 student Thomas Nye believes Christ’s College takes careers advice seriously – with assistance starting as early as Year 9.
“If you look at it, by the time you get to Year 13, you have had exposure to so many different ways to get information about different careers, including ones you have never really thought about.” Thomas says “The one-on-ones with Mr Sellars are really useful, as are the General Studies programmes.’’

Careers Advisor Mr Chris Sellars says, “Some boys have definite ideas about their choice of career, but for many it may seem there is a bewildering range of choices. What we want to do is to open their minds to the variety of jobs they may be suited to, to show them that they do not just have to take the obvious career paths. We help them understand their strengths and introduce them to careers that make the best use of these strengths.’’ Mr Sellars interviews all Year 13 boys in their study period and most Year 12 boys building up a career profile. Appointments are made out of class time. “Firstly, we chat generally about the subjects they are studying and what their interests outside school

Thomas says he had intended to do medicine in Auckland and Mr Sellars advised him to go up to the Open Day so he could talk to lecturers about courses and options.
“He also talked to me about the option of going to Dunedin, which has more course options, specialty subjects and scholarships,” Thomas says. “I went to Dunedin for the Open Day and have to say it gave me a much wider lens on what is available inside medicine at Otago – specialties such as health sciences, physio and scientific research.”
Thomas has not made up his mind yet, but will attend the
