At the opening on May 20, 2015 Sir Miles Warren, who was the College architect for 44 years, named the building and said he was honoured that it had his name as it had been designed by Old Boy Alec Bruce.
Representatives of Charles Upham’s family were among guests seated in the Charles Upham Quad where the opening was held. Flower’s House Year 9 student Finn Hamilton paid tribute to the life and achievements of the Old Boy, who is the only New Zealander to receive the Victoria Cross and Bar. A new memorial to Charles Upham in the Quad had been designed and donated by Mr Adam Julian. Year 13 student Jed Smith spoke of the gift to College of the first Chapman Building. Mr Chapman originally donated £3000 for a fives court, which was eventually
demolished to make way for the Chapman English block. The family’s gift is remembered in the new Chapman Room, which is used for functions and large gatherings. Head Prefect Lachlan Stark addressed the Year 13 students also attending the opening. These boys had been at school for only a few weeks when the earthquakes struck and had lived with disruption and rebuilding during their school careers. “The building is a symbol of our resilience,’’ he said. “But while it is an excellent facility, it is still a
