NEVER TOO LATE - SEPT 2019

Volunteer Corner

Senior Companion Program Jose Hernandez is a volunteer with PCOA’s Senior Companion Program. He spends time with a number of older people who are isolated and in need of friendly visits, transportation and support. Jose was assigned to visit with Mike, a 98-year-old WWII Veteran who had become increasingly lonely and depressed since his wife Mary passed away. Jose and Mike sometimes go shopping together, or to the cemetery to visit Mary, but what has made the biggest difference in Mike’s life is having someone to talk to. Jose says Mike is “a changed man, not lonely.” To all of the people Jose visits with through the program, he has a special message: “I’ll be there for you all the time… I’m your friend until the end, adding, “my thing in life is everyone has a purpose…my purpose is to help.” Being a Senior Companion can bring purpose to your life, too.
