Bulls will be sold in a format where each lot will be running across the TV Screen in the Sale arena in a normal auction format as well as online at the same time. SETTLEMENT AND DELIVERY We will continue to develop and feed bulls until Mid-April at the new owner’s cost. Free Nationwide Delivery on bulls purchased for $5,000 or more. We will do our part to provide a ride for all the other bulls. GUARANTEE All the bulls on this offering are guaranteed to pass a fertility and health examination. In the event a bull fails a semen test we will work to provide a suitable replacement bull. Welcome Wishing all cattle enthusiasts a happy and healthy spring. As we look at the last year, as usual it has been very eventful in the cattle industry. You can look at the cattle market graphs and compare them to the Rocky Mountains and just hope you landed on the upside of that hike when selling your cattle. A lot of obvious points of interest we are seeing: • We are down 10% Cows since 2021 What does that all mean? Well, I don’t really know, there are a lot of ways to look at this. Yes, numbers are down so you would think prices will continue to rise. However, when you look deeper into the story there are so many other factors like the hanging weight of beef now compared to 20 years ago. I bring up these points because there is one common denominator that remains the same. That is, we are all trying to raise better cattle on fewer inputs that weigh more at weaning time! That concept hasn’t changed so my best advice is to pay attention to the markets, but keep cultivating your normal beef management practices. As a producer keep using your own eye and pick what cattle you think fit your program the best! The EPD’s are still a great guideline, but they are not a policy, sometimes I feel like we get a little too caught up in the data. You look at a bull for structure, longevity, consistency, balance, easy fleshing ability, and my favorite heavy muscle! When people ask me “how would you select a bull?” I pay some attention to the numbers when selecting a herd sire. I look at my guidelines mentioned above then I ask myself, does this bull represent what I want my calves to look like? If this answer is yes that is what I am going for every time. At SRA we have made some changes. Less is more, we have eliminated our online sale and offered all our bulls other than a handful for backups on this sale. We continue to offer great heifers from the heart of our herd. This year we have over 50 heifers on sale and 60% of them are AI calves or ET calves. The remainder of the heifers are the top cut of our natural sired heifers. We continue to offer some good cows and heifers that fall out of our calving interval but may fall right into yours. We know this is the best offering we have ever had. Although our geography isn’t the largest when it comes to cow numbers, we know our top bulls can run with anyone. • We are up 100% in Retail beef prices since 2003 • We have 87.2 million cattle and calves, the lowest before that was 82.08 million in 1951. As we move into 2024 breeding, we are changing some concepts and just buying semen on the 3-4 Bulls that we think are the best in the industry and using our own herd bulls for natural service. So, as we go forward expect the same number of bulls with only 3-4 sire groups. Lastly, the question that always comes up is where do you think the Red Angus breed is at? My opinion stands from last year. We have bred so much birth weight focus into the breed we are behind in the feed yards and I see it annually. So, I encourage everyone to select a bull for growth because the chances are the cow you are breeding it to already has a low BW influence especially if it’s red! We will always continue to offer heifer bulls after all that’s where it all starts. When not breeding heifers please consider growth for the benefit of your bank account and the Red Angus breed. RED ANGUS GUIDE TO EPDS
ProS - An all-purpose index that covers economically relevant traits across all aspects of the beef supply chain from conception to carcass. HerdBuilder (HB) - Need bulls for developing a profitable cowherd and maximizing the value of marketed progeny? Select a bull with a high HB value. Producers selecting bulls to develop profitable replacement females and maximize the value of non-replacement marketed progeny should incorporate the HerdBuilder Index into their selection decisions. The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following scenario: • Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers • Replacement heifers retained from within the herd • All remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid Given that replacement heifers are retained, significant influence is placed on the obvious maternal ERTs of Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. Additionally, with all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs also impact the HerdBuilder Index. GridMaster Index (GM) - If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profit. Use the Gridmaster Index if your operation’s primary goal is maximizing profitability of feeders in the feed yard and on the rail. The Gridmaster Index is built using the following scenario: • Red Angus bulls mated to cows • All progeny sold on a quality- based carcass grid Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs are the traits of primary importance in the GridMaster Index. Calving Ease Direct (CED) - Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted. Birth Weight (BW) - Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW.
Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) - Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are. Milk - Predicts differences in weaning weight in daughters progeny due to milk production. Maintenance Energy (ME) - Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted. Stayability (STAY) - The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age. Marbling Score (Marb) - Select bulls with high Marb EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime. Yield Grade (YG) - Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid-marketed progeny. Carcass Weight (CW) - Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue. Rib Eye Area (REA) - Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade. Backfat (Fat) - Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low Fat EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

We are starting with the bulls that we feel have the most consistency from top to bottom. The Beckton Epic sired DAM of this bull is the best cow in our herd. Lot 2 is our first Stockmarket son offered with more to come. This bull is one of the three we took to the Denver Stock Show this year. Phenotypically he is dang right, just beautiful. Although this mating was bred for power, he is also very heifer friendly. His Dam goes back to Oly Oscar, she is a 2019 model and has had top bulls in our sales since 2021. She has never weaned off a calf less than 700 pounds. Again, very strong bull in growth EPD’s (top 5%).
