It really seemed as though nothing more was left to be said about this im mortal lyric of the soul. When John Mc Neill laid hold of it under the figure of a well-tuned harp, and “in an easy, art less way” let his fingers stray among the strings, he demonstrated that its notes are exhaustless, for it seems like a new song in his deft, spiritual, musical hand. Its six strings are touched as with the hand of an artist and it yields messages of love, confidence and comfort which touch the depths of the soul and bring new light and courage to the hearts that know the real burdens and. joys of life. The author of the little book is a poet and a prophet and has a strong whole some message for the men of his day. His bow is abiding in full strength for this little book shows that his mind is active and his soul aglow and his style, if anything, is richer and fuller than in the early days when he published his first volumes of sermons. No matter how many books you have read about the twenty-third Psalm you can not afford to miss reading .this fresh, inspiring and gripping word. The things here set forth may have been often said before, but no one ever said them, just like John McNeill—he is surprisingly fresh and original and always touching the deep things of the soul.—J. M. M. Dr. Conrad has a style all his own, al though at times he reminds us of the late Dr. Forsyth. His sentences are short, gripping, suggestive and epigrammatic. While you are not conscious of a process of analysis in the subject he is handling, yet there is a constructive background of thought back of each chapter and run ning throughout the whole book. The main thought is comradeship with the Carpenter, which is his way o f,speak ing of the life of nearness to God. This is illustrated from different points of view by striking texts from the teachings of Jesus, and the book was undoubtedly preached as sermons to his own church and happy are the people who are favored with so rich a ministry in a faithful evan gelical interpretation of the Word of God. We commend the book to all interested in a faithful interpretation of the life of fellowship with God through His Son, the Carpenter of Nazareth.—J. M. M. Dr. W. L. Pettingili, dean of the Phil adelphia School of the Bible, is one of our well known Bible teachers. His book on “God’s Prophecies for Plain People” is a simple statement of the view held by the Scofield school of interpretation. It contains articles which were first writ ten for the “Sunday School Times” in 1914 and answers to a number of ques- Comrades of the Carpenter B y A. Z. C o n r a d , D.D.
