Here’s to Looking Out for Dad
I learned a lot from my dad. He worked hard. His mind was on his responsibility as a father. When you have a family to care for, hard work takes on new meaning.
Not asking for help can mean the difference between living with pain and getting rid of it. Sometimes a person powers through because they assume it’s the “right” thing to do. They think their pain is just a consequence of their work or getting older, so they just “deal with it” because they figure it’s normal for it to be there. In reality, pain is often a sign that something is wrong. If it doesn’t go away on its own in a few hours or days, it means there is something you need to take care of. The last thing you want to do is try to push through and not take care of it. This Father’s Day, take the father in your life out to a nice meal or cook up something yummy at home. Remind him to take a break and ask for help when he needs it. Maybe he needs a spa day, some fresh air in the great outdoors, or some physical therapy. And maybe he just needs to be reminded that it’s okay to take care of himself.
Many of you may be able to relate. There are a number of roles fathers play in our lives, but the role of a hardworking provider is a common one.
Of course, it’s different for each of us, but what’s interesting is that the same drive that pushes fathers to work hard and take care of their families can sometimes be detrimental. For one, they might be spending more time than they prefer away from their families. And secondly, they might not take care of themselves . We’re all familiar with the stereotype that men are notorious when it comes to asking for directions or asking for help. They might refuse help — even if they need it. While it is a stereotype, it’s something we’ve all encountered here or there. I’m guilty of it! As we approach Father’s Day this year, this is something I’ve been thinking about. Fathers are busy people! They don’t always take time to care for themselves in the way they probably should. Sometimes, the best gift a person can give a father is a reminder to take care of themselves. We all deserve to care for ourselves, and when our lives get to the point that we neglect it, we deserve it even more! Let them know they can take a break — and let them know they can ask for help!
Happy Father’s Day, dads. There are people looking out for you!

ARE GROCERY SUBSCRIPTION BOXES WORTH IT? June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, so let’s explore one popular way to get more fresh produce into our lives: subscription-based delivery services like Full Circle and Imperfect Food. Are these services actually worth it? Do they save money and provide what they promise? Here’s what the research turned up. Can they save you time? The Verdict: Yes, without a doubt. Subscription-based grocery delivery services appeal to consumers because they save time. With somebody else doing your grocery shopping, you don’t have to think about when you’re making a trip to the grocery store this week. Someone else is doing it for you!
subscription-box delivery services offer nonfood items like toilet paper or cleaning products, so you may still have to make a trip to the store every once in a while. Is the food quality great? The Verdict: Yes, but it depends on your area. You have a higher chance of getting better grocery items if you buy from an organic grocery box service, like Imperfect Foods or Farm Fresh to You, since these companies work closely with your local farms. Keep in mind that some services, like Imperfect Foods, are designed to deliver fresh foods that are a little “imperfect” in size, shape, or color to help prevent food waste — but, as a benefit, it’s more affordable! However, we’ve found some services, like Full Circle, will prepackage their boxes from warehouses that may not be local to you, so do a little research before picking one. All in all, we’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that these boxes aren’t such a bad idea. Consider looking into it if you’re tired of the weekly grocery store time crunch!
Plus, some services even offer meal kits if you can’t decide what to make. There’s no argument here — these services definitely save you time.
Can they save you money? The Verdict: Sometimes, since it depends on your existing shopping habits. If you find yourself making impulsive purchases while strolling down the aisles at the grocery store, then a set (but customizable) weekly list of delivered groceries might be a great way to stick to your budget. Unfortunately, not many grocery
3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BRING A FRIEND TO PT TIME TO BUDDY UP!

At Mission PT, we often ask patients to bring in a friend or family member when they come in for their therapy appointment.
It may seem like an odd thing to ask at first, but once you come in, it makes perfect sense, and here’s why.
hope. When you’ve never seen PT in action, you might not realize just how helpful it can be. Many people associate PT with major rehabilitation — it’s something you do after an accident or injury. But PT is so much more than that. It helps people with headaches, vertigo, and balance as well as recovery after an injury. In many ways, seeing is believing. So, if you have a PT appointment coming up in the near future, be sure to ask us about bringing in a buddy (and tying it back to our Father’s Day article on the cover, you could even bring in your
1. When you bring in your friend, family member, or significant other, you get another set of eyes and ears on the therapy session. This way, if you forget anything or aren’t sure how to do something at home, you have an extra resource you can lean on for help. Plus, they can remind you if you neglect an important at-home exercise!
2. They get to see what we do at Mission PT. When you, as a patient, bring in a friend, the friend will see how we’re helping you with what you have going on. Seeing this, your friend may ask more about PT and realize that physical therapy can help with their problem as well! Seeing PT in action can ultimately lead to relief of their own!

MEETING YOUR NEEDS WITH PT
SUDOKU
Say Goodbye to Pain and Hello to Living!
We all have things we need in life, but some needs are more fundamental than others. If we look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (developed in 1943), we understand that we must first meet basic physiological needs before we move on to more complex areas of our development. Such basic needs include food, water, warmth, and rest. This is why food drives are so common — and why many churches and nonprofits focus on feeding and sheltering those in need. They know it’s critical to meet those most basic needs before other things can be addressed.
There’s a similar idea between pain and physical therapy. If your pain “needs” are not being met, it becomes harder to meet other needs in your life. Pain gets in the way of what you are able to do and what you want to do.
The Best Grilled Summer Vegetables
This can cause a ripple effect through your entire life. Pain can take you away from doing the things you love, such as spending time with your kids or grandkids, hobbies, sports, and other activities. It can also impact your life in other ways, such as disrupting your sleep, which can lead to a whole host of other problems.

If you’re in pain, is it something that is starting to disrupt your life? Has it already?
If your needs are not being met, it’s time to do something about it. With physical therapy, we can help you meet your most basic needs in overcoming pain and discomfort so you can work on meeting your higher needs — such as getting back to the gym, the garden, hiking, or running around the house with the grandkids.

PRO TIPS TO CREATE A MOTIVATING PLAYLIST Orchestrate Your Workout
Whether summer temperatures drive you to work outside or simply make you want to move indoors where the air conditioner is blasting, having an upbeat playlist can help you quickly pass the time and feel good, too. There’s no better way to learn how to put together a motivational playlist than to ask a pro. Peloton’s bikes and treadmills are wildly popular, but now, users are working out through their app because of the high-energy instructors, many of whom have become known for their amazing playlists. Here are two instructors’ tips to put together a killer playlist. Mix It Up Instructor Leanne Hainsby is known for the eclectic, feel-good songs that keep people pedaling hard in her cycling classes. Hainsby credits her vast musical tastes to her time as a dancer, which expanded her playlist for workout music. Which songs make the cut? Ones that inspire. “I think people will be so surprised by how much they will push themselves when they’re moved by the feeling of a song or how the music makes them feel,” she says. It doesn’t matter if it’s ambient electronic music or a lilting Johnny Cash tune, both of which can be found routinely on Hainby’s cycling playlists.
Make It Themed Whether you’re obsessed with ‘90s pop, classic rock jams, or David Bowie, you can use a theme to create workout playlists you’ll love. This is a great trick pros like Peloton instructor Christine D’Ercole use. D’Ercole is beloved by many for her themed classes, which range from an indie rock beginners’ ride to a fan- favorite all ‘90s ride. She also has holiday-themed playlists, like the one for her Women’s History Month ride in March that featured only female artists. You can always hop onto Spotify and check out the Peloton page to see all of their instructors’ recent playlists. Use this for inspiration to create your own list or stream whichever compilation catches your attention for your next workout.
