The Days he Genesis account of creation was written in such a way as to have meaning for men of all ages. To achieve this, details were left to a minimum and only a broad outline of the creative activities of God was given. Since the account is not very specific every generation has had to interpret it in the light of then- knowledge and culture. This has re sulted in many and varied interpre tations. One of the places where interpre tations have differed has been in the significance placed upon the word day. For many years the Christian generally held that this stood for a 24 hour day. There was no reason for believing otherwise until the discov eries of science, particularly those of geology and paleontology, caused some to think that perhaps the word was not being used in this sense. The events the geologist and paleontolo gist were describing covered more time than a week. Thus when we are told that fish first appeared in the record many million years ago while mammals appeared much later, it becomes difficult to correlate these dates with a record spanning only six 24 hour consecutive days. Various attempts have been made to explain away the geological evi dence so that 24 hour days can still be held. It has been suggested that fossils represent forms that lived be fore Adam and that they were all destroyed by a catastrophe described in Gen. 1:2. The remainder of the Genesis account is. then thought to be that of a new creation. Another ex planation suggests that all of the strata were formed and the fossils
of Creation deposited during the flood of Noah. Both of these explanations (and varia tions of them) have proven to be scientifically unsound in the light of modern scientific discoveries. What then must the Christian do? There are two suggested ways of solv ing this problem that are acceptable. First is the age-day theory. Accord ing to this theory the word day refers to a broad period of time during which God was performing certain acts of creation. It would be used in the sense that it is in Gen. 2:4 where it refers to all of the creation events described in Gen. 1. Or as it is used in Isa. 49:8, referring to the day of salvation, or as Christ used it in John 8:56, where he says Abraham rejoiced to see His day. These are some exam ples of how the word can stand for periods of time longer than 24 hours. Another acceptable use of the word that has been suggested by some fun damental scholars is that it refers to days of revelation. According to this explanation the creation account was revealed in six days. Thus the events described in any particular day did not actually take place in that 24 hour period. But it was during this period of time that God revealed to the writer of Genesis how the partic ular phase of creation being consid ered was accomplished. The revela tion is concerned with a period of time greater than 24 hours but the actual time involved in receiving it was not more than 24 hours. At the present time either of these interpretations of the word will har monize the creation account with science and are therefore worthy of the Christian’s consideration. END.
