POEMS FOR JULY

R eflected G lory by Fannie Brown

H arvest by Mildred Allen Jeffery By their fruits ye shall know them (Matt. 7:20). Thoughts grow within my mind Like apples on a tree. A bud, a blossom, fruit, Then seeds— abundantly. They drop into my heart

The moon looked down on its double, In the placid lake below; Its light reflected the glory Of the sun’s God-given glow. It sailed aloft in the heaven, ’Twas the pride of all the sky ’Mid bright-eyed stars that kept twinkling, While lazy clouds passed by. I watched in wonder, then softly Came a voice distinct and low, “ The hand that formed me is mighty, And guides me well, I know.”

Tirelessly through the long nights On my journey hour by hour, I travel o’er the same course Propelled by God’s great power. With smiling face, though the storm clouds And the darkness hide from view, I glorify my Creator And ever carry through. With contrite heart I prayed humbly, “ Help me, Lord, to shine for Thee, And steadfast keep on my giv’n course May Thy beauty be seen in me.”

To germinate, and grow. Until their fruit is ripe— For then it is they show, In actions good, or bad, The kind of thoughts I had.

R iver o f L ife by Elayne Tedder “ Please, may I hold your hand, dear Lord? There’s a river of life that I must ford. The way is hard and the road is steep. I’ll need some help through the waters deep.” I took God’s hand and on we went, But I slipped and fell ’ere the day was spent. We tried again but it didn’t work. I lost my grasp and was often hurt. Once more I called on the Lord for help. I had failed in my tries to save myself. “ Dear Lord,” I cried, “You under stand. This time You better hold my hand.”

There Shull Be W a r s by Anna Williams

My son knelt down beside his bed and prayed a small boy’s prayer: “ Dear Lord, bless Mommy. Find my ball; I’ve hunted everywhere. Help Daddy in his work, and help my Sis at school, and then Help me when I grow up to be 4-F. Amen.” I, listening, smiled. And then the truth of what he prayed gripped me. In his whole life there’s been no peace nor hope of peace. And he Has prayed as best he knows. Why should he pray that wars should cease When all his life there’s been no time of peace? “ There is a peace,” I told my son, “ that you can know for life. The peace of God will bring you through the times of war and strife. No need to fear, for God is here. Just lean on Him and know God’s peace within your heart; and where you go, He’ll go.
