I am going Ice Skating!
Note to Caregivers: The purpose of this social story is to help individuals become comfortable going to ice skating at Eble Park Ice Arena, or to other similar ice parks. It is suggested that you read this book to them before they visit so that they know what to expect when visiting.
I am going ice skating at Eble Park Ice Arena.
It will be cold inside the arena. I will need to wear some of my outside clothing inside when I am skating.
I can bring a helmet and some knee pads to wear if I want to!
I can bring my own Sensory Go Bag so that I have things that help me. My bag might look like this.
It will be loud and will echo in the ice arena. I might wear headphones or use ear plugs to help with the loud sounds.
This is the lobby at Eble Park Ice Arena.
The floor at the ice arena feels squishy! This is so that ice skates do not scratch the floor and so we do not slip.
I am going to bring / rent skates (circle one)
If I rent skates, I will go up to this window near the ice rink. They will help me find the perfect size and type of skate.
I will sit at a table or a bench in the lobby to put my skates on.
I might need some help to stand up after I have my skates on because my feet will feel wobbly! I can ask my family, a friend or a volunteer for help.
I will practice walking with my ice skates on when I am in the lobby.
Here are some videos that I can watch to help me know what to expect. The videos will help me know what to practice when I get on the ice.
This door leads to the ice rink. When I am ready, I can walk slowly to the door.
There will be adults by the door to help me.
The rule is that food and drinks are not allowed in the ice rink.
Wow! It’s cold in the ice rink!
I see a big circle with tall walls around it. These are called Boards.
There are people skating all around the ice rink!
People can watch the other skaters from the bleachers.
If I want to watch the skaters, I will need to take my skates off to go on the bleachers. Safety First! The rule is that we never crawl near or go under the bleachers.
It’s time to go on the ice! The ice will be slippery so I will go slow.
I can try a Skate Helper to help me skate, or I can hold on to the wall to help me balance.
HOLDING THE WALL
I can also hang on to an adult’s or friend’s hand to help me.
I might fall down and this is OK. I will take a break when I need to. I can keep trying!
SKATE HELPER
If I need to use the bathroom, I can talk to mom, dad or a friend to help get me there.

RELAXING ROOM
I can ask a volunteer to help me get to the Relaxing Room. The Relaxing Room is right near the bathrooms. The Relaxing Room has chairs to sit in, and there will be some fidgets and items to help me relax. When I leave the room, I will put the fidgets into the collection box.
There are things in the Relaxing Room that are only for the Eble Arena staff to use.
I will keep my hands away from those things so that I can stay safe, and so that others can too. If I see a Don’t Touch sign, I will keep my hands away from that item.
BREAK ROOM
If I need a smaller or quieter space, I can use the Break Room. I can ask a volunteer to help me get there. The Break Room will look a little different and will have low lighting and some fidgets to help me relax. As soon as I am ready, I can go back to the ice rink. When I leave the room, I will put the fidgets into the collection box.
If I am tired from skating, I can sit in the lobby to take a break.
There is a bench in the corner of the lobby that I can sit on.
I want to be safe when I am sitting here and keep my skates close to the bench .
There are also tables and chairs in the lobby where I can sit.
Some tables are near a TV that might be showing sports.
Other families will also be taking a break or having a snack.
There are snacks for sale at the ice rink.
If I buy food or snacks, I will sit at the tables in the lobby to eat. Food and drinks are not allowed in the ice rink area. I might not be able to buy the snack that I want at the ice rink and that is OK. I can still have a lot of fun today!
When it is time to go home, I can come out to the lobby and sit at a bench to take my ice skates off.
I might need help with this.
It will feel funny when I walk without my skates on. I will stand up slowly and hold someone’s hand if I need help.
If I rented my skates, I will return them to the Skate Rental Window.
When I turn my skates in, I will they get my shoes back to put on. If I brought my skates from home, I will put my shoes on and wait until it is time to leave.
I had a great day at the ice rink today!
