Summer is here, and with it comes an exciting season of growth, change, and celebration at Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC). As always, our mission remains focused on providing meaningful opportunities for our community to connect, learn, and grow through the arts. This year, we are thrilled to share several exciting developments that highlight our ongoing impact and future vision. HONORING A BALLET LEGACY We must first express our heartfelt gratitude to Miss Karrie Benedict, who has been a cornerstone of our School of Ballet for 17+ years and will be retiring from her teaching role this summer. While we'll miss her positive presence in class, we're excited to have her join as emeritus faculty for continued mentorship. Read more about Miss Karrie’s incredible career from the Petoskey Member Spotlight feature on page 3. A DECADE OF ART IN TRAVERSE CITY We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of CTAC’s Traverse City campus! Over the past decade, this vibrant space has fostered creativity, inspired artists, and served Northern Michigan through dynamic arts programming. To mark this milestone, we’re hosting special events throughout the year as part of a 10-month fundraising campaign, ensuring a bright future for arts in Traverse City. Flip to page 11 to find our schedule of events. WELCOMING THE SUTTONS BAY ART FESTIVAL We are excited to announce that in addition to the annual Crooked Tree Art Fair in Traverse City in July, CTAC will be managing the beloved Suttons Bay Art Festival, a longstanding tradition that brings artists and the community together. Join us August 2 and 3 at Suttons Bay Marina Park as we continue this cherished event’s legacy.

NEW FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMMING IN PETOSKEY In Petoskey, we are launching Immersed —a summer-long celebration of our region’s extraordinary aquatic environments through art, science, and community collaboration. With exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and camps, Immersed invites us to explore and appreciate Northern Michigan’s natural and cultural treasures. Check out pages 14 and 15 to learn more and see our schedule of free events. A FRESH LOOK & ENHANCED EXPERIENCE This summer, we are revamping our website to provide a more intuitive and user-friendly experience. We hope this makes it easier for you to explore our programs, register for classes, and stay connected with CTAC! Our summer is packed with incredible events that bring people together to celebrate creativity. Whether you’re attending an exhibition, concert, kids summer camp, adult workshop, or community event, we hope you’ll join us in making this summer unforgettable. None of this would be possible without YOU—our members, donors, volunteers, and supporters. Thank you for being part of the CTAC family. I look forward to seeing you soon!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MISS KARRIE BENEDICT

In 1999, she discovered her love for teaching and, in 2008, was invited by Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet Artistic Director, Heather Raue, to lead a master class. That summer, she was offered a faculty position, a role she has cherished for 17 years and will continue through June 2025. “My favorite experience has been watching dancers I started when they were 4 grow into pre- professional and professional dancers. Because I knew them so well, I was able to create roles specifically for them. Sometimes my goal was to exemplify their strengths and sometimes it was to bring something out in them they didn't know they had. Being in Miami last year to watch our alumna Taylor Naturkas make her debut as Firebird with Miami City Ballet was the pinnacle of that experience.” As a choreographer, Miss Karrie has created numerous works for the School of Ballet’s productions, including the annual Nutcracker and June Show. Whether crafting atmospheric pieces—like the tornado in The Wizard of Oz —or storytelling moments—such as the funeral scene in Snow White —her process always begins with music, ensuring each selection is authentic and evocative. Though she is stepping away from her full- time role, she is honored to have been granted emeritus status and looks forward to continuing with the School of Ballet through master classes and mentorship. “I am also excited to be able to consider new collaborations with the many dancers, musicians, and visual artists I have stayed in contact with over the years.”

With a lifelong passion for dance, Miss Karrie Benedict began training at The Bullard School of Ballet in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of four. She went on to earn a BFA Honours Degree in Dance from York University in Toronto, Ontario, before performing and studying with The White Street Art Center in Urbana, Illinois.

"Since 2008, Miss Karrie has shaped the lives of thousands of young dancers at CTAC School of Ballet. Her dedicated and unwavering passion and expertise has introduced and instilled the beautiful world of dance, strong foundation, and work ethic to our Northern Michigan youth for over two decades. We look forward to continuing to work with her as emeritus faculty. We love you and thank you, Miss Karrie!" - CTAC SCHOOL OF BALLET ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, HEATHER RAUE

SCHOOL OF BALLET Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director Heather Raue, the CTAC School of Ballet trains young people for careers in dance and is dedicated to its legacy. The School of Ballet offers professional training in ballet and alternative dance modalities, as well as in stagecraft, screendance, lighting, choreography, pedagogy, and Special Needs Artistic Movement to nearly 150 students annually. Our pre-professional students have gone on to dance professionally in many American dance companies including: Miami City Ballet, Charlotte Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre. They have attended prestigious MFA and BFA dance programs, are on our faculty, and thrive in dance-related careers. We are proud to have brought world-class dance education to well over 4,000 students (ages 4+) in Northern Michigan and beyond.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JANET OLIVER

A DECADE OF CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY: JANET’S JOURNEY WITH CROOKED TREE ARTS CENTER For the past decade, Janet Oliver has been

a dedicated member of Crooked Tree Arts Center, drawn in by a desire to be part of a thriving arts community.

“My inspiration was to become

part of an art community—an organization that supported the arts, provided workshops for further learning opportunities—personally help support the arts here in [Traverse City],” she shares. Since joining in 2015, Janet has immersed herself in all aspects of CTAC, forming lasting connections with fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Her membership has been a deeply enriching experience, offering opportunities to learn, teach, and showcase her work. “I have met many fellow artists, taken classes, and become a volunteer where I work with the great people at Crooked Tree Arts Center in TC,” she says. Beyond personal growth, CTAC has played a crucial role in her artistic journey, helping her expand her skills and even gain commission work through the connections she has made. As an artist, Janet values CTAC’s role as a vital resource in the community. “Where else can you show your work, sell your work, learn more to expand your skills, and share what you know with others?” she reflects. She particularly appreciates the breadth of programming that CTAC offers, from exhibitions and workshops to the renowned Paint Grand Traverse event, which brings in talented artists from across the country. Looking back on ten years of membership, Janet finds it difficult to pinpoint just one standout moment. “It’s more a collection of moments— meeting and talking to artists, learning how they tackle different situations, what supplies they use, and the challenges they have overcome.” However, one of the most meaningful aspects of her CTAC experience has been the relationships she has built. “The most important connections for me have been getting to know the staff at Crooked Tree. They are fantastic! They go out of their way to help address questions and locate resources, in addition to being so friendly and knowledgeable.”

Through the support, encouragement, and vibrant community at CTAC, Janet has found a place where she can continue to learn, create, and connect. “It has become a valuable part of my life!”

For those considering membership, Janet wholeheartedly encourages them to join. “Membership ties you to others in the community who have similar interests and provides many opportunities to enhance knowledge and experiences.”

Serving Our Arts Community Ten Years

From March through December 2025, we are highlighting our impact with monthly events and initiatives, culminating in a special 10-Year Anniversary Fundraiser in October. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s to come: Schedule of Events

Dear Friends of Crooked Tree Arts Center,

As I reflect on my time at Crooked Tree Arts Center, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we have been on together. While I was not here when ArtCenter Traverse City first merged with Crooked Tree, I have had the privilege of being part of this community for over eight years—witnessing its remarkable growth, deepening connections, and expanding opportunities. Every day, I am reminded of how much the arts mean to our community. Whether it’s providing a space for artists to showcase their work—from the art fair and holiday art market to exhibitions and teaching opportunities—or creating moments of joy and discovery through classes, workshops, and family programs, our mission is clear: to connect, inspire, and engage. One of the greatest joys of this work is seeing those connections in action. Watching artists find their creative peers, students discovering their voice, families exploring together, and that undeniable spark when someone is truly moved by an experience —these moments are what make our work so meaningful. As an artist myself, I know firsthand the transformative power of the arts. And to play even a small role in fostering these experiences is an honor beyond words. I wholeheartedly believe that we are just getting started. The future of Crooked Tree Arts Center—Traverse City is bright, and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Through her work, she aims to capture emotion in small but impactful details—body gestures, the fall of light, or the drape of clothing. Her creative process often starts with a feeling or a title that guides her compositions, always with the objective of sparking joy. Connie began donating artwork to Dart for Art about 12 years ago and after moving to Northern Michigan permanently in 2016, she quickly became an active member, participating in workshops and volunteering as part of CTAC’s installation crew, including setting up countless Dart for Art events.

Connie Landis, a vibrant and expressive oil painter, has been selected as the featured artist for Dart for Art 2025. Her painting, Unbridled Spirit , will serve as the inspiration for this year’s celebration. Connie’s family home on Lake Charlevoix where her mother, renowned landscape artist Martha Landis, lived for over 40 years has always been a source of inspiration. Her parents instilled in her a deep appreciation for the arts, antiques, and the natural beauty of Northern Michigan, shaping her path as an artist. While she grew up in an artistic household, her career in art began in earnest in her 30s, and her distinctive style developed over the past 20 years. Connie’s work is driven by an
