CTAC Art News Summer 2025

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JANET OLIVER

A DECADE OF CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY: JANET’S JOURNEY WITH CROOKED TREE ARTS CENTER For the past decade, Janet Oliver has been

a dedicated member of Crooked Tree Arts Center, drawn in by a desire to be part of a thriving arts community.

“My inspiration was to become

part of an art community—an organization that supported the arts, provided workshops for further learning opportunities—personally help support the arts here in [Traverse City],” she shares. Since joining in 2015, Janet has immersed herself in all aspects of CTAC, forming lasting connections with fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Her membership has been a deeply enriching experience, offering opportunities to learn, teach, and showcase her work. “I have met many fellow artists, taken classes, and become a volunteer where I work with the great people at Crooked Tree Arts Center in TC,” she says. Beyond personal growth, CTAC has played a crucial role in her artistic journey, helping her expand her skills and even gain commission work through the connections she has made. As an artist, Janet values CTAC’s role as a vital resource in the community. “Where else can you show your work, sell your work, learn more to expand your skills, and share what you know with others?” she reflects. She particularly appreciates the breadth of programming that CTAC offers, from exhibitions and workshops to the renowned Paint Grand Traverse event, which brings in talented artists from across the country. Looking back on ten years of membership, Janet finds it difficult to pinpoint just one standout moment. “It’s more a collection of moments— meeting and talking to artists, learning how they tackle different situations, what supplies they use, and the challenges they have overcome.” However, one of the most meaningful aspects of her CTAC experience has been the relationships she has built. “The most important connections for me have been getting to know the staff at Crooked Tree. They are fantastic! They go out of their way to help address questions and locate resources, in addition to being so friendly and knowledgeable.”

Through the support, encouragement, and vibrant community at CTAC, Janet has found a place where she can continue to learn, create, and connect. “It has become a valuable part of my life!”

For those considering membership, Janet wholeheartedly encourages them to join. “Membership ties you to others in the community who have similar interests and provides many opportunities to enhance knowledge and experiences.”
