his return to Cholmeley was short lived and he died in 1920 at the age of 52. He was succeeded by Mr F H Knott but the school did not continue for many more years and closed in 1926.

Cholmeley House T his Prep School was established in 1904 by Mr Alexander The school was smaller in size than many of its rivals (numbering just 28 boys in 1911) but still played fixtures with many of the other Prep schools in Eastbourne including St Andrews and St Cyprians. During the First World War, Mr Paterson served his country and attained the rank of Major. He was also mentioned in dispatches. Sadly, Paterson. In 1907 he moved it to a new location, taking over the rectangular plot on what is now the Beresford Astro. accommodation was provided by Eastbourne College in the buildings at Ascham St Vincents. This was lying empty following the prep school’s move out of Eastbourne. During the war years the school was evacuated, initially to Midhurst (Wispers school) and then Gloucestershire (Rosehill School). The fire and the War were a double blow for the school though and, with dwindling numbers, the school merged with Summerfields in 1943 so St Cyprians ceased to exist as a school in its own right. Lewis Vaughan Wilkes died in 1947 and Cicely then moved back to Eastbourne, taking up residence once again in St Cyprian’s Lodge. She remained there until her death in August 1967. world’s largest sporting events; by 1939 it attracted no less than 25,000 entrants from all corners of the globe. One of the prominent people who taught at the school and also ran the shooting was the 2nd Master R.L. Sillar. He taught there for 30 years from 1899 to 1929.
