A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

Welcome back to our Summer Term Year 9! We have had a wonderful start to the term and students have loved enjoying the sunny weather outside in their break and lunchtimes. This week we had an assembly on Feminism based around the book ‘ Feminists’ don’t wear Pink’, a collection of essays curated by Scarlett Curtis. I wanted the assembly to be a positive and empowering look into the women who shape us and how we should strive to create a community which celebrates each other’s achievements. Congratulations to 9EMU who won the award for most Epriase points for the second term in a row - brilliant work ! Our termly attendance award goes to 9EFR for having the best Year 9 attendance. This is a great achievement and they will have a celebration at the end of this week. For the Summer Term the attendance focus is on ‘most improved’ attendance. Please can I ask parents and carers to discuss the importance of being in school on time with your child(ren). We know that attendance below 90% means students miss on average 1 school day in every 2 week cycle, which equates to missing almost 4 weeks of school in a year! All clubs have started again. For our budding sports enthusiasts we have athletics, rounders and cricket clubs for Year 9. There will be Borough Sports coming up - please can your child(ren) express their interest to their PE teacher. Our behaviour focus for this half term is Chromebooks. As a school we are making it a priority that all students who have a Chromebook bring it to school every day, charged and ready. Failure to have a Chromebook for a lesson will result in a behaviour point awarded - please remind your child/ren of this moving forward. We hope you have a fabulous bank holiday weekend and we will be back in school on Tuesday 6th May.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls

Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!
