The 32-acre site came under NHS ownership in 1948, providing specialist orthopaedic, rheumatology and respiratory care across the county. After a serious overspend, the hospital was closed in late 2004 and has since fallen into a state of neglect. TheGrade II listed StandishHouse,the former hospital’s art-deco style ward buildings and the gate lodge on Horsemarling Lane will be converted into 48 homes. A further 99 new build homes have also been approved for construction within the park's grounds. Construction has begun on a major building project at one of the county's best-loved specialist children's centres. Phase Two of building at the Chamwell Centre Charity project at the Milestone School in Longlevens kicked off with a ground- breaking ceremony. Donors and supporters joined pupils ofThe Milestone School and The Chamwell Centre Charity team to mark this special occasion. Pupils of The Milestone School prepared keepsakes and artwork, which they buried in a time capsule, along with building plans for the new Chamwell Centre. Head boy, Jack, and head girl, Mia, placed the lid on the time capsule and added the first spades of soil around it. The £5million centre will house state-of-the-art hydrotherapy equipment, a soft play and rebound therapy centre.
