public figures and influential people, and almanacs that make you look forward to the incoming new year, just to name a few. There’s also the fiction genre, which can appeal to anyone of any age, gender, from any walk of life. Because what is more interesting than a good story? It can be about anything under sun—space wars, a vampire- werewolf romance, a young hero’s quest—and in the process broadens our imagination, and also improve our vocabulary and grammar. Author Neil Gaiman said it best, “Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them. It’s much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!” Here is another advantage of giving someone a book as a present for Christmas. Reading books is tied to a longer life. According to a study in 2016, book readers lived an average of almost two years longer than those who do not read at all. In 2013, another research found that those who read (fiction, especially) tend to be more empathetic. And if we think about it, people who read books tend to prefer staying indoors which lessen the chances of getting hurt physically. This basically means that you’re helping keep your recipient mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. So Merry Christmas and you’re welcome. EC
