Licensing contractors It might be the case that publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report passed you by, but it is part of FMB’s role to examine these types of reports to identify any potential impacts on our members and get involved in shaping policy. The phase 2 report was published last September and one of the recommendations is for a licensing scheme operated by the construction regulator to be introduced for principal contractors undertaking the construction or refurbishment of higher-risk buildings The Building Standards Division hosted an invitation- only event at the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities’ (COSLA) offices in Edinburgh to discuss the recommendations relevant to the Scottish construction industry. FMB Scotland Director Gordon Nelson spoke about the FMB’s campaign on licensing. Many agreed that the recommendations in the report and the work underway to strengthen the building standards system in Scotland aligned well with FMB’s views on licensing construction. There is a lot more to follow this year on licensing across the UK. In Scotland, the FMB is connected with the key stakeholders and policymakers to influence the direction of licensing contractors. Sow the seeds for success

Gavin and Simone McAllister, Regional Support Executive, an important opportunity to speak to enthusiastic parents and young people. “We met so many talented young women wanting to work in the construction industry,” Simone said. “We need to continue to reach parents and young people to show them how diverse and exciting our industry is.” FMB staff signposted visitors to courses and FMB member companies looking to recruit apprentices. “We will continue to work with schools, colleges, policymakers and the government to promote construction as a career,” McGuire said.

The Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week in early February shone a light on construction to attract the next generation of skilled workers. It’s up to the construction industry to show others how rewarding a career in construction can be. “We need to speak enthusiastically to young people and returning workers about the opportunities the industry offers,” FMB Northern Ireland Director Gavin McGuire said. As part of Apprenticeship Week 2025, FMB NI staff attended many events to promote construction apprenticeships. At one event in Newry Southern Regional College, 1,000 people came through the doors, giving
