As we approach Father’s Day, I can’t help but feel lucky to call myself a dad to two great kids. If you’re a longtime reader of this newsletter, then you may remember my daughter, Emily, and my son, Alex. Time is flying by with these two kids, but we’re making some pretty great memories along the way. Emily has just wrapped up fourth grade, while Alex has finished third. Being so close in age means they experience the same milestones together and often share similar experiences. They ride their bikes together, have some of the same friends, and enjoy the same things as any brother and sister do. Of course, as Emily and Alex have grown, we’ve watched them develop their own passions and hobbies. Emily loves to dance and make crafts, and you can often find Alex outside playing all kinds of sports, particularly baseball and basketball. Like any pair of siblings, they know just how to get on each other’s nerves, too, but by and large, they are two great, thoughtful, kind kids. Adrienne and I could not be more proud of them, and we are cherishing the moments we have as a family. One of our favorite ways to spend time together is to go on road trips. We even have some pretty long ones under our belts, which is no small feat when you have little children! We like to make the traveling a trip in itself by stopping at various restaurants, getting hot cocoa, and looking at the local attractions along the way. The destinations themselves vary. Like their mom and me, Alex and Emily love exploring. They would be content with a day at the beach or hiking through “As they have gotten older, Alex and Emily have becomemore curious about theworld around them, and I believe jumping in the car and traveling to a newdestination is a great way tomake connections.” Great Adventures
Creating Family Memories on Our Road Trips!
a national park. All that really matters is that they get to learn something new or discover a new part of the world. As they have gotten older, Alex and Emily have become more curious about the world around them, and I believe jumping in the car and traveling to a new destination is a great way to make connections. There’s so much more out there than their Pennsylvania home, and to watch them experience all the wonder and beauty this world has to offer is beyond special. Occasionally, Adrienne and I will take a trip on our own, but we usually end up re-planning the entire vacation with our kids in mind. We like to find gems that offer them adventure! The kids still talk about the trips we took down to Myrtle Beach, and they absolutely loved our adventure in the Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The best part is that they are pretty happy anywhere we go, especially if we can explore the outdoors. I’m glad that we get to experience family hikes, trips, and new towns together. I know there are people who would prefer to travel alone, but I can’t imagine traveling any other way than with my family right beside me. Sure, the hours in the car with the kids may be long, and not every day feels like a magical adventure, but the experiences and memories we make as a family are worth the trek.

3 Ways to Replace a Canceled Vacation Vacations provide opportunities for families to spend time together in a relaxed environment, get away from the routines of everyday life, and create meaningful memories. If you’ve recently had to cancel a trip but still want to create the experience of a vacation for your family, then a staycation is just what you need. TransformYour Backyard When you’re trying to recreate a vacation, the outdoor areas of your home present a variety of possibilities. You can turn a sandbox into a relaxing beach, complete with a kiddie pool “ocean.” If you have trees, then set up a zip line or obstacle course. You can even stimulate summer brains with a scavenger hunt around the backyard with hidden clues in the dirt or bushes. The ultimate prize can be something you would have purchased on your original vacation, like a souvenir you can find online. Create a ‘Family Museum’ Many vacations include an educational aspect in order to enrich our understanding of the place we’re visiting, and museums are a great way to accomplish that. If you’re confined to the house, then teach your kids about your own knowledge and interests and encourage them to get creative and make their own contributions, too. Have everyone create art, take photos, or write about their prized possessions. Display these Turn Your Vacation Into a Staycation
masterpieces around your home and let their creators take you on a tour. Learning more about one another builds meaningful bonds.
Bring Your Trip Home You probably chose your original vacation destination in order to experience new and different cultures and activities. But just because you’re no longer traveling to that location doesn’t mean you can’t experience some of what it has to offer! Research popular local cuisine, activities, and history of the area, then create ways to experience them with your family. Cook a traditional meal, recreate a scenic location through photographs, or share a story about local lore and history. Your changed plans will no longer feel like a missed opportunity. Staying at home doesn’t mean your family can’t have the fun of a vacation. All it takes is a little creativity and innovation to build an experience that will bring your family closer together.
Why We Love PT
I now have less difficulty moving to a standing position from a sitting position. I have barely any difficulty with the stairs and can walk for longer than an hour and not feel knee pain. All of these things are great improvements and have made my quality of life much better. I imagine that attending any physical therapy clinic with knowledgeable therapists should produce the same results. But there’s something I feel most certainly makes Gilbert Physical Therapy a really special place! It is the care, commitment, and personal interest each person working there exhibits. A huge thank you and shoutout go to my team led by the great Dr. Jon and others including Dr. Jeremy, Pat, Rachel, Erin and Mike, who all worked with me to help improve my knee ailments. They all made me feel welcomed and comfortable right from the start.” –Mary E.
“For many years, I dealt with knee pain. I had great pain kneeling, could not bend my knees well, had difficulty and pain while using the stairs, and could not walk for more than 10 or 15 minutes. I was also extremely stiff standing up from a sitting position. An orthopedic surgeon recommended full knee replacement surgery ... I decided to explore physical therapy.

Loosen Up
Stretches for Prolonged Sitting and Road Trips
Pedal Those Feet After you’ve warmed up, stand about 1 foot away from your car with your legs shoulder-width apart. Lean forward and place your hands on your car. From this position, lift your heels one at a time, targeting your feet and calves, which are often tense as you control the pedals. Then, focus on your hips. Place one hand on the car for balance, and cross one leg over the other just above the knee (if possible), making a figure four with your legs. Slowly lower your torso down, as if you were sitting, to pull on your hip flexors. Repeat this motion on the other side. Work the Upper Body Finally, stretch out those arms for optimal snacking and steering. Start by placing your hand on your hip with your fingers pointing behind you. Grab the bent elbow with your other hand, and pull it forward slightly until you feel a pull in your shoulder column. Repeat this on the other side. Then, tilt your head down and pull down on it very gently with one hand. Repeat this move a few times to feel your neck loosen up. Now, you’re all set! Hop back on the road or settle into the couch for another Netflix binge. Whatever it is you’re doing, if your pain persists, our team can help. Give us a call to find relief from joint or muscle pain.
BRAIN THERAPY! Walk Around You may look a little funny doing this, but at your next stop, get out and walk around your car. You could even go for a leisurely walk around the gas station or rest area. Moving your body is one of the best ways to protect your joints and keep your muscles strong, which crave movement. This will help loosen your body after a long period of sitting. There’s nothing quite as freeing as traveling down an open road and listening to your favorite tunes with the anticipation of your next stop lingering in the background. But if you suffer from chronic pain, you may dread long bouts in the car. While this spring’s COVID-19 pandemic may put a damper on the road trip season, these stretches can keep your body limber whenever you have your next great adventure — or if you’ve been sitting at home for too long!
