“ Why did God not make the Bible so plain that every one could under stand?” said one. “If God made coal as fuel, why did He not put it on top of the ground in stead of burying it deep beneath the surface?” was the reply.—Five Thou sand Best Modern Illustrations, by Hallock. Stories of Jesus M a r k 4 :1 -9 MEMORY VERSE: Exodus 20:8; or, “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Lk. 11:28). AIM: To show that God wants to make of every child’s heart a place where His Word may grow. APPROACH: “Mother, tell me a story!” Have you ever said that? All of us enjoy stories. Shall we hear a stdry that Jesus told? LESSON STORY: Once, Jesus said, there was a sower—a man who had seeds to plant. The sower took his seed bag and went out to sow the grain. 5 § .l\ I V l5 o F \ right, but when the 9 U l YIZ3IWI \ hQt Slm smiied on them, and they tried to stretch out their roots in the ground, there was not enough earth for them to grow in, and they withered up. Some seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew faster than the seeds did, and choked them. But some of the farmer’s seeds fell on good ground, that was warm and brown, and that had been plowed and watered. They took root and grew, and soon there was beautiful golden grain to be gathered. ■ Jesus wanted the people to know that He was giving them God’s Word, and that it was like seed. It had life in it, just as the grain had life. The people were like the ground into which the seeds fell. Some people were like a hard path where nothing could grow. Some were like stony ground. Some were like a thorn patch. But some were like the soft, brown earth. Jesus wanted the people to let Him make them like the good field, where the Word of God could grow in their lives. He wants to make us like that, too. Object Lesson • L isten in g a n d L e a rn in g OBJECTS: An ear of corn, and the outline of a human ear, cut from paper. LESSON: How are people like corn stalks? “They both have ears.” That is a very good answer. I brought an ear of corn with me, as well as a picture representing the human ear. The ear of corn cannot hear. The human ear is supposed to hear, but often does not, even when the person is not deaf. Christ in giving His, parables spoke of this kind of person when He said, “He that hath ears to’ bear, let him hear” (Mk. 4:9). The Lord knew that there were some who would hear and understand, apd that there were others who would not want to hear and un derstand. Isaiah dealt with thé same kind of' people, for he said, ' "incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live!’ (Isa. 55:3). Today, as well as, in the days of Isaiah and Christ, there are those who faij 40 hear God’s voice speaking to them. It is well for us to ask, our selves, “ Are we using our ears as God would have Us use them?” We should keep our ears aleirt, listening for the voice of God, and not be like the. stalk of corn which has many ears but never hears.
