and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which Is, being interpreted, Damsel, (I say unto thee,) arise. 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them straitly that no man shoiild know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. LESSON TEX*n Mk. 4:35-41; 5:35-43. GOLDEN TEXT: “ And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?” (Mk. 4:40). DEVOTIONAL READING: Isa. 9:1-7. Outline and Exposition I. C on tro lling N a t u r e ’ s F orces (3 5 -4 1 ) N OTE THAT it was obedience to powerless to escape (vs. 35-37). But without the “great storm,” the stupen dous power and grace of God would be less clearly seen. The darker the circumstances, the more unmistakably is revealed that the deliverance is n o t by natural means. The storm was sudden, taking them unawares. It was unusual, or they had known what to do. They appealed to Jesus, with what appears to be a rebuke: “Carest thou not that we per ish?” (v. 38). Was He ignorant of or indifferent to their peril? His action (v. 39) revealed that their accusa tion had been based upon their igno rance. He spoke to the wind and the sea as though to a personality, and immediately there was a great calm. Christ rebuked the disciples by His question, “Why are ye so fearful?” (V. 40) and answered His own ques tion by pointing out that fear rose from unbelief. Fear is unnecessary to the one who trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ and recognizes His nearness. Fear robs one of the joy that should prevail even in the midst of mysteri ous experiences. Fear is to be met and overcome only through faith in Christ, who is the Master of Satan and all his storms. In this passage there are two manners of life, fear and faith; and two powers in life, Satan and Christ. Fear allows Satan’s power; faith trusts in Christ’s power.. Fear admits “ God, but—” ; faith affirms “but God.” Filled with wonder, the disciples asked, “What mariner of man is this?” (v. 41). By natural means, no man can understand either the Person or the power of Christ. But the secret may be seen in His threefold relation to the will of God. In everything there was reference to'that will, defer ence to that will, and preference for that will. During all His life on earth,

Mark 4:35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the mul titude, they took him even as he was in the ship.
