this submission to the Father’s pur pose was manifested. In this attitude of heart and life we are to be fol lowers of Him. II. C ontrolling D eath (5:35-43.) Jairus approached the Lord Jesus, asking Him to come and heal his daughter who was at the point of death. On the way, the Saviour was interrupted by the woman who suf fered from an issue of blood, who also desired healing. Jesus healed her, say ing her faith had made her whole. While He spoke these words, a report was received stating that the daugh ter was already dead, and that it was useless now for Jesus to proceed to Jairus’ home. But the Saviour at once reassured, the father’s heart by say ing, “Be not afraid, only believe” (v. 36). When the Lord Jesus came to the house and found the people mourn ing the. death of the child, He told them she was not dead but sleeping. This was the same word He used when speaking of Lazarus who had died (cf. John 11:11). But they laughed, so sure were they that the little girl was be yond recovery. With only the father, mother, and three disciples in the room, Jesus spoke to the child and called her spirit back from the realms of death by a voice stronger than death, a voice heard and obeyed in the unseen spirit world. He not only controls the wind and raging sea—elements that are felt and seen, but He controls also the arch enemy, Death. All yield to the majesty and authority of the voice of ' the Lord Jesus Christ. In this dispensation He manifests pis power over human ills, speaking with the authority that controls and overrules nature, disease, and death. One day, He will speak in the majesty of judgment against all who reject Him, and there will be none to de liver. Because of this solemn truth, we are implored, “Harden not your hearts” (Heb. 3:8), but “while it is called Today” hear His voice and re spond to His merdy and grace. Points and Problems 1. "They took him even as he was in the ship" (Mk. 4:36). The thought is that the call for service was so urgent on the other side of the Lake of Galilee (5:1, 2) that there was no time for preparation for the voyage. This little incident is characteristic of the Book of Mark. “Immediately” event follows upon event. Jesus, knowing that there was a poor demoniac on the other side of the lake who needed the touch of His power, made haste to re spond to that need. In spite of the fact that He had already spent a busy day in ministry, “the same day” (v. 35) He went across the lake to serve.

There is no time for indolence in God’s service. , 2. "He was . . . asleep on a pillow" (v. 38). A beautiful picture of the per fect humanity of Christ! He was tired. The day had beer, crowded with teaching. Psychologists tell us that a minister in preaching a thirty-minute sermon expends as much nervous ener-
