cerned, is to hold up the Lindbergh BeaGon. .The pilot cares a great deal about the existence of this giant bea con and little about the building which holds it. With such unselfish service should we be occupied—simply to hold up the Light for those who grope in this dark age. JANUARY 30, 1944 . GREAT LEADERS OF OUR CHURCH Let us think of “our church” as the one mentioned in God’s Word; that is, the church which is called the body of Christ (Col: 1:18). This “body” is composed of oil those who have ac cepted Christ as personal Saviouf, no matter to what denomination they be long. Ip the sight of the Lord, greatness in leadership does hot entail prominence of position, glamour of accomplish ment, or even the fact that the leader must be either in the pulpit, before the Bible class, or on the mission field. It does call for the possession of cer tain qualifications which are to be applied in one’s daily life of con tact with men and women of the world. W.e present four examples of Christian leaders and their applica tion of four requisites. For Those Who Have Topics I. CONSECRATION AND ZEAL (Rom. 12:1; Gal. 6:9). Joseph Fleming, athletic instructor at Los Angeles City College, Los An geles, Calif., testifies: “I believe I can contact men for Christ better through my work as an athletic coach than I could in any other way. 1 T im o t h y 6 : 11-16 By Anita Fletcher Introduction

the bench where I was sitting, and called out, ‘I did it, Coach, right out there In left field.’ ” II. VIGILANCE AND BIBLE KNOWL EDGE (Acts 8:26-39). An alert Christian business man, while driving on a business errand, offered a ride to a young soldier. The conversation began with hitchhiking, and then: “Have you ever figured out the long est hitchhike you have ahead of you —when you hitchhike to heaven?” “No, I have not,” the soldier an swered. They stopped at the side of the road. During the next few minutes the busi ness man so presented Christ through the Word to that young soldier that the latter replied, “I will take the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour, now.” III. COURAGE AND STEADFASTNESS (Josh. 10:25; 1 Cor. 15:58), A Christian woman, when serving on the jury at a court trial, asked the chairman whethor it was customary to open the deliberation with prayer. After much hesitation the chairman answered, “No.” However, there were tw o o t h e r Christians on the jury who that morn- ing had prayed that their testimony for Christ might be given in the court room. They added their requests to that of the woman, and prayer was offered. The following week, another trial took place for which this same woman was asked to be chairman of the jury. She immediately had prayer, and the deliberation took ap hour and a half instead of the usual six hours. Also, the customary “heckling” was lacking. IV. P RA I S E AND THANKSGIVING (Psa. 50:23). “In awarding decorations after the victorious Papuan campaign, he [Gen eral Douglas MacArthur] ended his citation with the words: T o Almighty God I give thanks for that guidance which has brought us to this success in our great crusade. His is the honor, the power, and the glory forever.’ ”— From the July 5, 1943, issue of Life. > For the Leader There are six other requirements for Christian leadership mentioned in the Scripture portion for this topic. It would be helpful to have them pre sented thus: righteousness (of walk,- cf. Col. 1:10); godliness (of speech,' cf. Matt. 26:73; Col. 4:6); faith (in prayer, cf. Matt. 21:22; John 14:13); love (for Christ and one’s fellow man, cf. Matt. 22:37-39); patience (in dealing with others, cf. 2 Tim. 2:24); meekness (to ward God, cf. Psa. 147:6; Matt. 5:5). Let each Christian Endeavor mem ber ask himself the question, “What is my leadership amounting to in God’s sight? Does it really count?"
The stories of mass murder of J e w s by the Nazis computed in the millions were first thought to be fantastic. Now un m i s t a k a b l e proof shows that heartless cruelty has been understated. A CHRISTIAN CHALLENGE These Jewish persecutions may be in God’s providence our opportunity to win them to Christ and show that we really care. This Society is now sending aid through Sweden to starving Jews in Poland* many of them children. This is in.addition to/our -ministry among the two and a half .million Jews in New York City,' including jhe care of Hebrew- Christian refugees. THE DIVINE IMPERATIVE “ Go-rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 10i6); is Christ's com mand with impressive meaning today.
