DECEMBER 2023
Spreading Hope YOUR REFERRALS CAN CHANGE LIVES It’s the season of giving, but at Bigger & Harman, we want to give back year-round. I know it can be easy to lose yourself in the festive frenzy of shopping and travel, but giving back is the simplest way to make the season even more fulfilling. Our team supports numerous nonprofit organizations throughout the year, and you may already know we give a monthly donation to the International Justice Mission (IJM) based on the number of referrals our firm receives. This month, I thought I’d share another organization I’m proud to support: Medical Missions Outreach. This incredible organization travels the world to offer medical assistance to those who desperately need it and would not have access to it otherwise. Not only do they offer typical medical services from physicians and nurses, but also multiple essentials every human deserves, including: • Optical exams and prescription glasses • Dental evaluations and extractions • General surgical procedures such as gallbladder removal or hernia repair • Physical therapy rehabilitation and occupational therapy • Patient education to help inform patients who are experiencing hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic health concerns A pair of glasses, a dental cleaning, and a general check- up are all things we might take for granted. But countless people live their lives without these necessities and have to go about their days with poor eyesight, dental pain, and overall poor health care simply because of where
they were born. That’s why I’m so grateful for the work Medical Missions Outreach does for these communities.
Even more, every medical team around the globe partners with a local church. This way, they connect people to a loving and supportive spiritual community to meet their spiritual needs as well as their physical needs. Medical Missions Outreach follows Luke 9:2, which shares that Jesus sent His followers to preach the Kingdom and heal the sick. To keep this life-changing and saving organization up and running, they need support for their medical professionals, volunteers, equipment, and medicines. That’s why our firm has promised to donate $20 to charities like Medical Missions Outreach for every referral we get. Your referrals matter! Word-of-mouth recommendations help keep our firm thriving so we can support humanitarian efforts like Medical Missions Outreach, IJM, and more. I hope you can share our services with friends and family who need our legal guidance. It will mean so much to us and the world for those needing basic medical care. You can visit Medical-Outreach.com to learn more about what they do, their values, and how you can contribute to the cause. Let’s join together to make this season merry for those all over the globe. The Bigger & Harman team and I wish you and your loved ones a joyful Christmas season and look forward to what 2024 has in store. –Paul Harman

A CAT’S NOSE KNOWS
The Guard Squirrel Who Went Nuts on a Burglar
Anyone robbing a house must know they’re getting into a dangerous situation. But the teenager who burgled Adam Pearl’s Meridian, Idaho, home had no idea what consequences were in store. Many homeowners have a guard dog, but Pearl got his home security from Joey, his pet squirrel. One day in 2017, Pearl came home and saw that something seemed amiss. Joey was excited, and the doors he’d left closed were now open. After finding scratches on the lock of his gun safe, Pearl knew there’d been a robbery and called the police. Officer Ashley Turner couldn’t help but notice Joey’s presence in the house but didn’t believe he was connected with the case — at first. A few hours later, Turner returned to Pearl’s house with his missing belongings and a story to tell. She’d partially identified the perpetrator by the suspicious scratches on his hands.
frightening. “He wasn’t expecting to have, you know, a squirrel come flying out of nowhere at him,” Officer Turner said. The thief reported that leaving was the only way to stop Joey’s aggression. After learning of his bravery, Pearl rewarded Joey with his favorite candy, Whoppers. But he then had a difficult choice ahead. When Joey was still a tiny baby, Pearl and his wife had taken in the abandoned squirrel. They had intended to release Joey back into the wild when spring came, but they were no longer sure. Ultimately, they let Joey decide. After he started playing with other squirrels through the home’s sliding glass door, the Pearls installed a cat door so he could come and go as he pleased. Joey spent
several weeks outdoors with other squirrels by day and returned to the Pearls by night. Eventually, he requested one final scratch behind the ears before disappearing into an apple tree and leaving the Pearls’ house behind forever. Though Joey returned to the great outdoors to live with his kind, his legend is a warning to humans. When you break into someone’s home, you never know what you might find.
During questioning, Turner said the burglar confessed to the home invasion and explained why he’d left sooner than intended: Joey attacked while he was attempting to break into the gun safe. Unsurprisingly, the rodent’s violence was
HOW A CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY CAN KEEP YOUR RIG AND WALLET ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Attention, truckers of the Golden State! Navigating California’s highways is no easy feat, especially when dealing with traffic tickets. One momentary lapse in concentration can lead to a citation that threatens both your driving record and your hard- earned cash. Before you resign yourself to paying that hefty fine, consider this: Hiring a California attorney for your traffic ticket might just be the smartest move you’ll ever make. California traffic laws are as complex as the web of highways crisscrossing the state. What seems like a straightforward citation could snowball into a series of consequences that can dent your wallet and tarnish your driving record. This is where a seasoned attorney can be your saving grace. Attorneys understand the legal system’s ins and outs and how to navigate it with finesse. They can identify loopholes, errors, or mitigating circumstances that could turn the tide in your favor. Imagine avoiding points on your record or even getting the ticket dismissed altogether — that’s money saved on the fine and potential increases in insurance premiums.
Speaking of insurance, let’s not forget the financial ripple effect a traffic ticket can have. Insurance companies are notorious for seizing any opportunity to hike premiums, and a blemished driving record is an open invitation. A skilled California attorney can negotiate with the court to reduce the charges or get the ticket dismissed, preventing the dreaded spike in your insurance rates. Time is money, and every minute you deal with the aftermath of a traffic ticket is a minute away from the open road. An attorney can handle the legal nitty-gritty on your behalf, saving you valuable time and ensuring you can focus on what you do best — driving. Before considering forking over your hard-earned dollars to the state, consider the long-term impact on your finances. Hiring an attorney for your traffic ticket may seem like an additional expense upfront, but it could be the key to keeping your record clean, your insurance rates low, and your wheels rolling smoothly down the highway. So, gear up, fellow truckers, and let a legal ally guide you through the maze of California traffic laws. When it comes to your money and your rig, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Everything in California is more expensive, even speeding tickets. The state is even known for having the priciest speeding ticket fines in the country, along with the heftiest penalties. This goes for both commercial truck drivers and the average car driver. But why? A California speeding ticket has multiple parts, including a base fine and surcharges. Additionally, if you speed in a construction zone, expect an extra penalty thrown into the mix. THE TRUE COST OF SPEEDING IN CALIFORNIA THE BREAKDOWN OF CALIFORNIA’S SKY-HIGH SPEEDING TICKET FINES

UNDERSTAND BASE FINES AND SURCHARGES. Here’s how speeding tickets are calculated. The base fine is calculated by how many miles you were speeding over the speed limit. For drivers in noncommercial vehicles, these base fines are:
• • •
1–15 mph over: $35 16–25 mph over: $70 26–99 mph over: $100
Now, you need to add in the surcharges, which increase according to the base fine:
• $10 state penalty assessment for every $10 or part thereof of base fine • $7 county penalty assessment for every $10 or part thereof of base fine • $5 state DNA Identification fund for every $10 or part thereof of base fine • $5 state courthouse facilities construction fund for every $10 or part thereof of base fine • $2 county emergency medical services (EMS) fund for every $10 or part thereof of base fine • A surcharge fee equal to 20% of your base fine • $4 emergency medical air transportation (EMAT) fee • $40 court operations fee • $35 conviction assessment fee • $1 night court fee While commercial truck drivers have a much more straightforward fine, the cost is higher than a regular speeding ticket. Truck drivers speeding on the freeway can cause fatal damage to themselves and drivers around them. So, their penalties are, without a doubt, more severe. No truck driver is allowed to drive faster than 55 mph, no matter what. Those driving 1–9 mph over the speed limit will face fines between $280–$320. For speeds 10+ mph over, fines are at least $484. REDUCE YOUR TICKET FEES AND PENALTIES. These fines can empty your wallet, and the points added to your driving record can put you out of a license and a job. However, you can fight back. Bigger & Harman can provide you with the proper counsel and guidance to lower your fines and prevent any damage to your record.
