ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath our classrooms, learning streets and significant River Red Gums that feature across our College ’ s landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri - Willam people of the Kulin Nation.

We thank the Traditional Custodians of this land and pay tribute to their ongoing connection to land, water, knowledge and culture.

We are inspired by those who have inhabited, nurtured and cared for this land since the beginning, and we aspire to continue caring for this land for the rest of time.

We pay our respect to ancestors, elders, and, those emerging to lead future generations, as well as any First Nations people connected to our College community.

CHILD SAFETY

DIVERSITY AND EQUITY

To thrive, young people have the right to a safe and supportive environment at school, at home, and, in the broader community; no exceptions. At the Lakes South Morang College, we believe meeting the physical, social and emotional needs of our students is paramount in laying the foundations for a fulfilling future. We pledge to provide an environment that has zero tolerance to child abuse and strive to work in partnership with our parents/carers and community members to keep our students safe; every day, in every way.

The Lakes South Morang College proudly celebrates and affirms our diverse College community.

We recognise that diversity exists in bodies, hearts and minds, and, we commit to promoting equity, inclusion, compassion and mutual respect. Diversity and equity enrich our College and both are instrumental to our success as we nurture a community of learners and future leaders who feel safe to: express themselves; explore the world around them; and, develop and grow in a global and dynamic society.

The Lakes South Morang College Secondary Handbook

OUR STORY

Nestled in the heart of South Morang, The Lakes South Morang College stands proudly, its roots deep within the soil, much like the majestic River Red Gums that grace its grounds. The land on which The Lakes stands has long been a place of teaching and learning, as it has been for the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of this Country. For generations, knowledge, culture, wisdom, and nurturing of the land has been passed down to all who inhabit it. In their spirit, we too embrace our role as custodians, committed to protecting and caring for all that lives and learns on these grounds. We honour the Country of the Wurundjeri - willam people by fostering an environment of respect, custodianship, and growth, ensuring that this land continues to be a place of learning for generations to come. The ancient River Red Gums adorning our grounds have watched over the land for millennia, their towering forms symbolising resilience, growth, and the passage of time. As with every tree, our students begin their journey as tiny seeds, full of potential and promise. Just as a tree grows through different stages—from seedling to sapling, and finally to a mature tree—so too do our students as they progress from Prep through to Year 12. Each year brings new branches of knowledge, each experience adds to the richness of their character, and every challenge strengthens their core, just as the trunk of a tree becomes sturdier with age. Our College is home to many types of eucalyptus trees, reflected in our College emblem, each one unique yet connected by a shared environment. This diversity mirrors our school community, where each student, staff member, and family brings their own individuality to our collective experience. Like the

eucalyptus trees, we stand tall together, celebrating our differences while nurturing a shared commitment to growth, learning, and connection. Our emblem also features gentle waves, which represent the natural ebb and flow of learning and development. These waves symbolise the Plenty River and surrounding waterways that sustain the River Red Gums and also represent the different levels of schooling that our students navigate— starting from the early ripples of Prep, moving through the steady currents of Primary school, and eventually riding the stronger waves of Secondary education. In every wave, there are moments of calm and moments of challenge. Our students learn to navigate these with resilience and adaptability, just as the eucalyptuses bend with the wind but remain rooted in the earth. As they progress, they are supported by the entire school community— teachers, peers, and families—ensuring that no wave is too daunting to overcome. The Lakes is not just a place of learning; it is a thriving ecosystem where every individual is nurtured and where the growth of each student is as natural and inevitable as the growth of the great River Red Gums that have stood for generations. Together, we are all part of this vibrant, interconnected community, each contributing to the legacy of strength, diversity, and growth.

LEARNER COACHES

LEARNER REVIEW MEETINGS

A Learner Coach is a dedicated educator who provides personalised academic support and guidance to students. Their primary role is to help students develop effective learning strategies, improve their study habits, and achieve their educational goals. Learner Coaches work one - on - one or in small groups with students to address their individual learning needs, goals and challenges. Learner Coaches regularly monitor students' progress, provide feedback, and adjust learning strategies as needed to ensure continuous improvement. They act as a mentor and advocate for students, empowering them to take control of their learning and succeed academically.

Learner Review Meetings are held in Term 1 and Term 3, following distribution of Progress Reports, and are in addition to a Meet and Greet session at the start of the year. During these meetings, parents/carers are invited attend sessions, alongside their child, in order to be an active and equal partner in the learning process. These sessions with classroom teachers provide updates regarding students ’ learning progress. Appointments are conducted in a hybrid model (onsite or online) for 10 minute durations and bookings are made via Compass.

ATTENDANCE

Schooling is compulsory for people aged 6 to 17 years (unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted). Daily attendance is important for all students to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind - socially or developmentally. The Lakes believes all students should attend school all day, every day when the school is open for instruction and is committed to working in partnership with the College community to encourage and support full school attendance. Senior school students are required to have a 90% attendance record at school in each subject to successfully pass any Year 10, 11 or 12 subject. This includes any approved absence. Students who fail to meet this requirement will be asked to attend either break time or after school redemption classes. Every 3 weeks, a letter will be sent to families when student attendance falls below 80% for that attendance period. Punctuality is essential to every session throughout the school day. Key Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are determined within the first 5 - 10 minutes of each lesson, supporting students to understand and prioritise learning for each session. Students who are late to individual classes will need to report to the administration office for a late pass. This will be recorded and communicated to families via Compass. Students arriving to school late, or departing early will need to do so with parental/carer permission from the administration office.

ABSENCE

Families are asked to notify The Lakes of absences by recording the absence on Compass or alternatively contacting the Administration Office on either campus. If a student is absent, and the College has not been notified by a parent/carer, the College will contact families via a Compass notification to the Parent Portal. Extended students absences need to be communicated to the Administration office.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE

Dear New and Incoming Families,

Research has proven that when parents/carers have a strong partnership with their school and are involved with it in some way, their children are likely to be happier, more confident and perform better in their learning and relationships. Your involvement, no matter how big or small, will help us continue to build a community where every student can flourish. For our students, being part of school council activities is a wonderful opportunity to develop leadership skills, meet new friends, and make a positive difference. I encourage all students to explore the various clubs, committees, and programs we offer and to take advantage of these leadership opportunities. Once again, welcome to The Lakes South Morang College. We hope that you will take the opportunity to build a partnership with us and look forward to your active participation in our school community, so that together, we can support our students as they develop their skills as creative problem solvers and critical thinkers. Should you have any questions or wish to learn more about how you can get involved, please don ’ t hesitate to reach out to me or any member of School Council.

On behalf of the members of The Lakes South Morang College School Council, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our school and to our active and diverse community. At The Lakes, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment where students are encouraged to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Our dedicated teachers and staff are committed to supporting each student ’ s unique journey, ensuring that they feel valued, respected, and inspired to reach their full potential. In addition, we also raise, review, discuss and action issues that are important to our parent/carer community. Strengthening our community engagement with a problem - solving mindset underpins everything we do, and vice versa, a well - informed and effective School Council strengthens community confidence. I therefore would like to extend a special invitation to you and your family to become actively involved in the life of our school, and your voice and participation can make a meaningful impact. Whether it ’ s through attending meetings, lending a hand at events, sharing your ideas and feedback, or helping out in the classroom, there are many ways to get involved and contribute to our school ’ s success.

FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS

The Lakes believes that strong family - school partnerships are foundational to the success of our students. Families are not just observers in their child's education; they are valued members of our College community and equal partners in the learning journey, empowering students to achieve their full potential.

Our College is built on the values of Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect, and these values guide our approach to family engagement.

Learning: Learning does not begin and end in the classroom. When families engage in their child ’ s education, support their learning at home, and stay informed about their progress, their academic success is enhanced.

Leadership: Every family is viewed as a leader in their child ’ s education. Family insights, aspirations, and expectations help shape the educational path that young people take. Families are encouraged to lead with confidence and integrity and take active roles in decision - making processes and advocacy for their children. Teamwork: Education is a shared responsibility. Our College thrives on the collaboration between families, teachers, and students. We believe in open communication and mutual support, where the school and families work as a team to address challenges, celebrate successes and create the shared conditions for learners to thrive. Respect: At the core of any strong partnership is respect. We respect and value the diverse experiences, cultures, and perspectives that families bring to our community. By fostering a culture of respect, all families are valued and included. Mutual respect strengthens our relationships and enhances our College community.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE SECONDARY CAMPUS

STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION Students have different teachers for each subject and move between classrooms for each lesson. The Campus operates on a two - week timetable, with the daily schedule divided into five hour - long sessions across the day. Each student is assigned a Learner Coach who is their first point of contact at the school. Each year level also has a Year Level Leader who supports students in the year level. LEARNING, HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENTS Learning is a progression, which means that it becomes increasingly specialised as you move through each year level. Homework becomes more regular and challenging, with assignments that require more independent research and study. Assessment becomes more formal, with regular tests, exams, and reports that contribute to overall grades and future academic pathways.

RESPONSIBILITY AND INDEPENDENCE Students are expected to take greater responsibility for their learning, manage their time effectively, and be more independent in their studies. Students are expected to be able to navigate their daily timetable with the required equipment needed for each class. Students use Compass to access their timetable, important daily announcements, reminders and learning tasks.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES There is a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports teams, clubs, and leadership opportunities, often held before or after school, or during breaks. These provide a great opportunity for students to pursue passions and to meet people in other classes and year levels.

SUPPORT SYSTEMS There are specialised support systems, including subject - specific help, career counselling, and mental health support. Students should talk to their Learner Coach about the support that they may need.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION

Get to know your school: Practise getting to and from school and become familiar with the school grounds. This will help you to navigate your way from class to class.

Set up a daily schedule: Try to get into a regular routine that matches your new school hours. This means setting consistent times for waking up, doing homework, and going to bed. so that you know how much time to allow yourself to get to school on time and ready for learning. Prepare yourself: Prepare your school bag and locker with essential items that you need for a successful school day. This will include learning materials (laptop, books, textbooks, stationary), items to fuel your body throughout the day (water, food), and any personal care items that you may need. Keep a copy of your timetable handy—this might be attached to the top of your laptop screen, a laminated copy that you take with you throughout the day, and a copy to blu - tack to the inside of your locker to support with your daily organisation. Ask for help when needed: Don ’ t be afraid to ask questions in class or seek help from your teachers if you ’ re struggling with something. Taking charge of your own learning is key to your success. If you ’ re feeling lost or need extra help, don ’ t hesitate to reach out to students and staff. Be Yourself: Stay true to who you are. Starting at a new school is a chance to make new friends and explore new interests, but it ’ s important to stay true to yourself. Don ’ t feel like you need to change to fit in.

Be patient: Adjusting to a new school takes time. It ’ s okay if everything doesn ’ t fall into place right away. Give yourself the space to adapt, and before you know it, you ’ ll feel at home.
