New Year, New Beginnings WHAT WILL 2024 HOLD?
Well, 2023 was fun, but now it’s time to welcome a new year. This time each year, I find myself in a reflective mood, grateful for the blessings and milestones that marked the past 12 months. Last year, I had the opportunity to do what I love and help my clients secure their financial futures. I took an awesome vacation with my daughter, celebrated 40 wonderful years with my wife, and enjoyed many of the little things in life — delicious food, good books, and the beauty of nature. I’m humbled by the opportunities that have come my way thus far in life. While some may enter the new year with a list of resolutions, I’ve always taken a simpler approach. Rather than setting lofty goals, I make it a point to strive for personal growth and improvement. I always want to do better than I did the year before, both personally and professionally. I’m a firm believer that progress, no matter how small, contributes to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Speaking of a fulfilling life, Make Your Dreams Come True Day is celebrated on Jan. 13. The concept is a gentle reminder to pause and reflect on our aspirations and dreams. If you could do anything in the world, what would it be?
If life’s constraints and financial considerations were not a factor, I’d have some dreams of my own. First, I’d take care of my family and ensure that they have everything they need and desire. If you know me, you’ll know that my family is always my priority. Beyond looking after my family, I’d want to travel everywhere in the U.S. and the world, and after I check off every destination, I’d aspire to check them off again. In my lifetime, the privilege of travel has graced me with a wealth of experiences, particularly during my time in the Marines. However, my wife hasn’t traveled quite as much. Back in the day, we used to take two trips each year, but in recent years, we’ve been homebodies. We find comfort in the familiarity of our home, the tranquility of our backyard, and the charm of our town. Our two Persian cats keep us busy and give us a good reason to stay home and be good kitty parents. However, my wife dreams of exploring the United States in a motorhome with our two cats. She’d love to explore the national parks, landmarks, and cities
that make this country the greatest country in the world. While I share her enthusiasm for exploration, I can’t help but wonder how long I’d make it in an RV — I think I could handle a few months, but after that, I’d go a little stir-crazy. Travel is essential. It broadens our perspectives, deepens our understanding of the world, and fosters a sense of connection with the culture and humanity. I hope that one day, circumstances will align, and we can turn this dream into reality. In 2024, I carry the lessons of 2023 and the power of nurturing dreams, no matter how grand or humble. May the coming year bring forth new adventures, continued growth, and the fulfillment of cherished aspirations for you! And for me, maybe 2024 will be the year we take a few months to travel the country — who knows?
Happy New Year!

A BRIGHTER TOMORROW
Positive Stories From the Natural World
Scientists discovered a hidden octopus nursery. Scientists found an incredible surprise in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of California. There, at the bottom of the thermal spring, were roughly 20,000 octopuses nestled at the bottom in a ball formation with their tentacles facing up — a position the animal uses to protect its eggs. Scientists
2,000 white rhinos will be released into the wild over the next decade. Conservation group African Parks recently purchased the world’s largest private white rhino breeding operation, which resulted in their obtaining 2,000 of the near-threatened animals. To help increase the rhino’s natural population, African Parks has developed a plan to rehabilitate and release these rhinos slowly — roughly 100 per year — into the wild over the next 10 years. By doing so, their goal is to “create
We live in a world where we’re constantly exposed to new information, thanks to the internet and 24-hour news cycle. Some of this information is certainly helpful, like the latest traffic updates before your morning commute or an article with tips to help your toddler string their first sentence together. But sometimes, it can feel like most of the information we absorb is negative. There’s a whole psychology behind why negative information sells and spreads the fastest, and media conglomerates and online trolls use it to their advantage. So, unfortunately, the online and televised media market is saturated with bad news. Thankfully, this isn’t an accurate reflection of what’s going on in the real world. So, we’re here to show you a couple of positive things happening in the world lately!

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the simple yet profound act of sharing a meal with family or friends. However, research suggests that eating together at least three times a week can significantly benefit overall health, particularly for children. Let’s delve into why this age-old tradition is more important than ever. Promotes Healthy Eating Habits One of the most immediate benefits of family meals is you generally eat better. Families sitting down to eat together are more likely to consume a balanced homemade meal rich in essential nutrients like calcium and fiber. This is especially beneficial for children in their formative years who need these nutrients for growth and development. Weight Management Eating together also helps in controlling weight more effectively. Home- prepared meals usually contain healthier ingredients and allow for better portion control. Mealtime structure also supports better eating habits, which can be a crucial factor in weight management for both adults and children. Positive Effects on Child Development Research suggests that eating dinner together positively affects child development. Children interact with adults and siblings, and conversations help them learn social skills, table manners, family values, and culture. Food for Thought The Benefits of Eating as a Family
Emotional Well-Being Family meals are not just about the food but also about spending quality time together. Enjoying a meal with loved ones allows family bonding and may even improve mental health. It contributes to fewer emotional problems and helps children feel loved, safe, and secure. Educational Benefits Mealtime conversations can be educational. Parents can discuss various topics, helping children expand their knowledge, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. This intellectual stimulation can be particularly beneficial for school‑aged children. Sharing meals with family or friends is not just a social custom but a healthful practice with numerous benefits. The advantages are manifold, especially for children. So, make it a point to gather around the table for a meal at least three times a week. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you.

We dedicate our lives to our children. There’s no doubt about that, and we’re not talking a few years. We spend more than 18 years giving every part of ourselves to each child. Then, the inevitable happens: They grow up! Our kids are no longer kids, and they move on to college or move out, and suddenly, we’re on our own. After all these years, it can feel impossible to remember how to live for yourself. What do you enjoy? What do you want to do from now on? Who are you without your children? These can all be questions swirling around in your head as you get closer to having an empty nest. As you spend more time on your own, you need to start a journey of self-discovery. What have you been too busy to do as a parent? What hobbies have you left behind due to the hustle and bustle? What friendships and connections do you wish to re‑spark? If you’re struggling to understand yourself, what you want, and who you want to be, practicing therapeutic activities first can give you a better idea.
