LES CANADIANS ÉLIMINENT LES HAWKS EN DEMI-FINALES

Pendant quelques mois, l’équipe n’a pas été en mesure de jouer ses parties à domicile au Complexe sportif de Hawkesbury à cause des problèmes de moisissures. C’est sans compter que plusieurs joueurs ont dû s’absenter au cours de la saison en raison de blessures ou de maladies. « Nous avons de loin surpassé nos attentes en nous rendant en demi-finales, a déclaré Rick Dorval. Nos joueurs ont beau- coup appris cette saison. Tout comme les entraîneurs de l’équipe, ils ont bien hâte à la mi-août, alors que commencera le camp d’entrainement. “It is not only a weekend when teams come to compete for the cup. It is also a community event,” said Mr Jackson. “Every year, we support a group. In exchange for a gift of $1,000, they see to the ticket sales at the door. This year, we are sponsoring the Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute.” Jackson, who now solely owns and runs the tournament, instituted a Hall of Fame this year. “The first inductee was Derek Duval, followed by the Ottawa Hosers, and Hamish Cunning,” concluded Jackson. Rendez-vous Nissan of Hawkesbury was the title sponsor for 2018. The games consist of two periods of 15 minutes. There is no stoppage in play, except for initial face-off, off-side and when a goal is scored. It is a no-contact tournament and some teams had men and women on their roster. If a penalty is called, the player does not go to the box. Instead, the puck is put on the blue line and the offended player gets a bit of a head start as he rushes towards the goalie. He is pursued by the other team or helped by his teammates to try to score.
Les Canadians de Carleton Place ont remporté la série en gagnant quatre parties d’affilée, mettant fin à la saison des Hawks. Les Canadians ont marqué le premier but pour remporter la partie 5 à 1, le mer- credi 4 avril. Les Canadians ont dominé pendant presque toute la rencontre. Ils ont marqué quatre buts sans riposte après que les Hawks eurent égalisé le pointage en première. La veille, les Canadians avaient vaincu les Hawks par un pointage de 4 à 1. Le samedi 31 mars, les Hawks avaient perdu à domicile par un score de 3 à 2. Le 30 mars, les joueurs de Carleton Place avaient blanchi l’équipe de Hawkesbury 3 à 0. Les quarts de finale se sont un peu mieux déroulés pour les Hawks alors qu’ils affrontaient les Colts de Cornwall. Cette série s’est terminée à la septième rencontre alors que les Hawks ont vaincu les Colts par The odds against the team managed by Bill Harden were 25:1, but they won the 14th Pond Rocket tournament held during the Easter weekend. L’Otequipe won the cup in 2016 and 2017. They could not attend this year because of a conflicting schedule. Fourteen teams answered the call and were grouped in two tiers. Players also came from the US. “I try to match the teams accor- ding to their strengths,” explained Jason Jackson, co-founder of the tournament. But once in a while there is a blow out. The Book Hockey club defeated the Kids from the Hill by a score of 15 to 2, Saturday afternoon. “The Kids may have partied a bit too hard Friday night,” laughed the organizer of the tournament. Harden Rock beat Chom and the Gang (10:1 favourites) by a score of 4 to 2 in tier 1. The Ottawa Hosers won tier 2 by defeating Book Hockey, 4 to 3. “The Hosers do not get a trophy, but they do have bragging rights.” MICHEL LAMY michel.lamy@eap.on.ca
THE HARDEN ROCK TEAM WINS THE CUP AT THIS YEAR’S POND ROCKET
The Hawks lost the fourth game of the best of seven series against the Carleton Place Canadians by a score of 5 to 1, Wednesday night at home. Having made the playoffs, the Hawks began the quarter finals against the Cornwall Colts. Everything went smoothly as the Hawks led three games to one after four games. But the Colts clawed their way back to tie the series. The seventh game took place in Hawkesbury on March 29. The Home team beat Cornwall 9 to 0. The semi-finals against the CPC saw the Hawks lose in four straight games. —photo Michel Lamy
