How to Make Drool-Worthy Burgers Every Time

I hate kitschy national holidays. I mean, does anyone really celebrate International Doodle Dog Day (May 1) or National Lumpy Rug Day (May 3)? Of course not. But when I found out that May is National Burger Month … Well, I had to make an exception and write about beef. (You know how much I love beef jerky.) I’ll never forget the first time I had a really, really good burger. It was at my friend Amanda’s high school graduation party. When I walked into the backyard, her dad was making burger patties by hand. He mixed ground beef, chopped onions, cheddar cheese, and Worcestershire sauce together and rolled the mix into balls. Then, he flattened them and threw them on the grill. That burger blew my mind! Until then, I’d only ever cooked with frozen burgers that looked like a bunch of hockey pucks in a bag. The handmade patties were a revelation. Ironically, I had to use the frozen stuff once I became an actual grill cook — I worked for my college dormitory’s cafeteria and for Arlington International Racecourse, which the Chicago Bears recently purchased — but I always made the good stuff at home. I still love standing at the grill, and over the years, I’ve perfected my own burger recipe. I use it to make drool-worthy burgers on the cast iron griddle of my Traeger. (The griddle gives the patties consistent heat and still delivers a smoky flavor.) Next time it’s your turn to make dinner, give this recipe a try! (And Score a Free One, Too!)

Ingredients

• • •

2 farm fresh eggs

1 onion

2 lb. ground meat (half lamb, half bison ... or use 85% lean beef) 2 tbsp. barbecue sauce

• • • • • • •

2 tbsp. mustard

One splash Worcestershire Salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp. Italian seasoning 1 tbsp. hemp hearts 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed

Jack circa 2007

Method

I like making my burgers with a 1:1 mixture of ground bison and ground lamb, but you can follow this recipe using ground pork or ground beef as well. 1. First, preheat your grill to 400 F. While it’s heating up, get to work on the burger patties. 2. In a large metal bowl, beat eggs and set aside. Chop onion (I prefer using yellow onion, but you can use whatever suits your fancy). 3. Place your ground meat into the metal bowl, and add the rest of the ingredients on top. 4. Next, crack your knuckles loudly, growl, and begin mixing all of the ingredients until they’re nicely blended together. 5. Form patties out of the mixed meat and set on a baking sheet or tray on the counter. 6. Then, wash your hands, you filthy animal. Next, cook your burgers for about 4 minutes per side. If you’re into cheese, add cheese. 7. Serve burgers with toasted buns, lettuce, and your favorite accoutrements. I love serving mine with garlic aioli and arugula.

5 YEARS OF LANDSCAPE MARKETING SUCCESS HAPPY ‘RAMBLERVERSARY,’ ROBERT!

Five years ago, Robert Felton was tired of selling print advertising. He wanted to jump into the digital marketing and SEO space and help businesses get better results. While hunting for a new job, he stumbled across Ramblin Jackson — and was blown away by our five-star reviews! That initial impression quickly turned into an interview. Why Ramblin Jackson? “I knew Ramblin Jackson was a great fit for me when Jack talked about how marketing was a tool to help drive sales,” Robert says. “If you know Jack, he wants to make sure whatever has his name on it is the best and is getting results. I knew this was a product I could confidently sell and that Jack and the team would have my back and work to make sure our product was the best.” Five years later, Robert is thriving as our Senior Landscape Marketing Strategist! He has learned a lot about marketing and

the green industry, but some of his most significant growth has been personal. What have you learned? “I have become a better salesperson and human,” Robert says. “One of the biggest lessons I have learned is how to have hard conversations with the people I’m close with. These conversations need to happen all the time, and you need to prepare for them. You need to ask for what you want and not let too much emotion in. You need to push for specific agreements and not rely on expectations. I’ve learned a better way to have the big conversations so I can be happier in the day-to-day, communicate, and work toward specific goals.” What a great takeaway! Feel free to steal Robert’s advice next time you’re having a tough conversation with an employee, laying down the law for your kids, or trying to compromise with your spouse.

What’s next? We’re currently growing our sales and marketing team, and Robert is leading the charge! He says, “We have worked hard to build ideas and a sales process that works. Now, it is time to grow and scale our great projects, skills, and processes to better serve more landscapers.”

We’re lucky to have Robert on our side. Cheers to five years and many more!

THE WORLD ISN’T ENDING 3 Strategies to Reduce Anxiety

Face Anxiety Head-On Many people try to avoid anything that could make them feel anxious. While this method may make you feel short-term comfort, it can cause you to be more anxious about specific scenarios. The best strategy to overcome anxiety is to face it head-on. Although it will be uncomfortable and challenging, don’t let it stop you! The more you put yourself out there, the less anxious you’ll feel. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for! Please contact your health care provider if you’re worried about the anxious feelings you get. They can assist you with identifying your triggers, why anxiety is occurring, and methods you can use to reduce your symptoms.

When most people think of anxiety, they likely have negative connotations tied to it. Many make the assumption that anxiety will always lead to panic attacks and fears of major change, but just about anything can generate feelings of anxiety, and not all of them are harmful. However, if your anxiety stops you from doing something, it can hinder you almost every day. In honor of May being National Anxiety Month, here are three ways to reduce your anxiety. Daily Exercise Physical activity can increase your self- confidence, improve your mood, help you relax, and lower anxiety symptoms. You don’t

have to do anything significant — you can go for a walk, take a hike, conduct at-home workouts, go to the gym for at least 30 minutes, or participate in yoga and Pilates. Meditate Sometimes, taking a step back, focusing on your breathing, and letting your thoughts flow in one ear and out the other can help you put things in perspective. JAMA Internal Medicine published an article stating that practicing mindfulness can help ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and pain. You can meditate by following a guided meditation or silently sitting in a quiet area and breathing slowly. While meditating will be challenging at first, it will become easier with practice.

The bigger your landscape company gets, the more people you’ll need to answer phones, measure properties, and send estimates. Do you have a plan for finding those workers? Most entrepreneurs aim to hire locally, but depending on where you operate, that might push your payroll budget too far. Luckily, you have another option: opening a remote office. How to Open a Successful Remote Office Going remote isn’t easy, but many landscape companies have done it! To help you understand how, Jack convinced successful entrepreneur Rafael Diaz of the Diaz Group LLC to share his secrets on “The Landscaper’s Guide to Sales and Marketing Podcast.” Over the last 20 years, Rafael and his brother, Reuben, have grown Diaz Group LLC from a small, four-person operation to

a $25 million company based in Chicago. They used a lot of different techniques along the way, but opening their remote office in Durango, Mexico, was a game-changer. “Growing our business, we had a little bit of a challenge because we didn’t have enough time to measure and do the takeoffs for all the proposals we were sending out,” Rafael explains. “We wanted to experience a high growth spurt, but we wanted to do it smartly. [That meant we needed to] have the right measurements, [and] the right information for every customer.” There was only one problem: It was “too time-consuming and costly” to gather that data in Chicago. So, the brothers innovated! They started hiring workers in Mexico to measure properties remotely using Google Earth and Go iLawn. “We rented a space, and we bought a bunch of desks, we bought computers, and we opened our office. We recruited everybody through Facebook and whatever [way] we could,” Rafael says.
