Mais le conseil qui a été élu en novembre a décidé, lors d’une assemblée récente, de renverser cette décision, citant que le terrain était dans un emplacement stra- tégique. Le rachat répondrait au désir de plusieurs citoyens qui veulent avoir un ac- cès public accru à la rivière, a soutenu le maire John Saywell. Par ailleurs, lors de l’assemblée, Marc Legris, entrepreneur et ancien candidat pour la mairie, a dénoncé le rachat. «La mu- nicipalité a déjà une mauvaise réputation», a-t-il dit lors de la période de questions. La décision envoie un mauvais message aux gens qui seraient intéressés d’investir dans Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. «On bloque tout. On va tout canceller», a-t-il dit.
Mais M. Saywell a dit que le nouveau pro- priétaire n’avait pas construit de bâtisses permanentes sur le terrain. Le maire a ajouté que la municipalité est prête à payer le même prix de 75 000$ aux propriétaires actuels, plus les frais encourus lors de l’achat en 2013. Déjà, il y avait une maison vacante sur le terrain qui comprenait une plage. Mais la municipalité avait démoli la bâtisse. Au cours des dernières années, les autorités avaient reçu des plaintes concernant des intrus et des flâneurs. M. Saywell a affirmé que le rachat est une décision saine tenant compte du fait qu’il n’y a pas de place pour du stationnement public sur le chemin dans le secteur des Chutes Bell.

ATV driver charged following chase A 29-year-old Plantagenet man has been charged following a police chase in the village February 22. At about 8:30 p.m., Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police Constable Pascal Boudreau observed a green Arctic Cat off-road vehicle with three passengers travelling onWater Street. After the four-wheeler drove through an intersection without stopping, Con- stable Boudreau tried to stop the ATV, activating his emergency lights, police say. The driver looked at the officer and he turned at the intersection of Main Street and Rue de l’Église without completing a second stop. The vehicle was eventually stopped on Concession Street. Stéphane Dion faces charges of driving while under suspension, escape by flight, wilfully engaging in a police pursuit, driving with no insurance, unlawfully driving an off-road vehicle on a highway. The accused was later released and is scheduled to ap- pear in court April 3. Theft at gas station A 27-year-old North Glengarry man has been charged after Stormont-Dundas-Glen- garry Ontario Provincial Police officers investigated a report February 15 of a theft at a gas station on Main Street, Alexandria. The investigation revealed that a man had removed items from the gas station without paying for them. Corey Helliker was charged with shoplifting and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. He is scheduled to appear in Alexandria court March 5. 27 charges During the week of February 17 to 24, Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) of- ficers responded to 210 occurrences and laid 27 charges. Officers investigated a break and enter incident, four assaults and one theft. Eight RIDE initiatives were conducted; one impaired driving charge was laid. Impaired driving charge Normand Nadeau, 57, of Lachine, Québec, was charged with driving while his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. He was later released on a promise to appear in court on March 19 in L’Orignal. The driver was arrested in the early morning of Feb- ruary 23, while Constable Walter Vandergoten was conducting a RIDE check on Main Street East, Hawkesbury. The vehicle was seized for seven days and the accused’ driv- er’s licence immediately suspended for 90 days. Break-in investigation Constable Sébastien Brisson has been investigating a break and enter incident that occurred February 19 at a Tupper Street, Hawkesbury residence. Police believe that culprits gained access during that afternoon via the front door. Money, prescribed medication and jewelry were stolen.
