Resilience of Democracies
The remaining challenge is to improve the resil- ience of democracy. Immediate disruptions to the system such as Russia’s war of aggression have shown that our community of values must work on a future- and bullet-proof vision of democracy. The key question was how to include all parts of society in decision-making to strengthen the foun- dations of democracy. To solidify trust and reshape democracy and promote active citizenship, the Track urges leaders to facilitate inclusive methods of engaging youth and marginalised communities who face struc- tural barriers to contributing their perspectives, legislating the government’s duty to respond to feedback, and ensuring accountability and measurement of success of the policy-making process. While the policy recommendations were not considered by the G7 Leaders, we stroke a respon- sive chord at the further engagement groups. In the context of the German G7 Presidency, we look back on constructive cooperation with various institutions and stakeholders which we would like to expand and deepen in the future. It is also a particular concern of ours to share our experience and expertise to contribute to the establishment and strengthening of participation, advisory and/ or consultation structures in political processes. With democracy under attack and declining around the world, the motive for dedicating ourselves to this challenge is to create a strong community of values.
We hope that the inclusion of our policy demands will be intensified in the coming years.
As the German G7 Presidency comes to an end, democracy remains under siege. To combat threats and support democratic efforts, the world requires active citizenship. We need to develop the G7 in the direction of a value-based partnership beyond the immediate economic and fiscal focus to support partners worldwide in empowering the idea of democracy. In this endeavour, G7 Leaders should include young people as they are an integral part of society and the future, a source of impetus, and often the spearhead of movements for liberty, equality, and democracy. Only when we manage to rebuild trust in our institutions can we harvest the benefits of democracy. Bearing in mind these complex challenges, we wish Youth7 Japan 2023 great success in coping with the various tasks, and a sure hand in the difficult but fruitful discussions!
