Edward St. John Foundation

Our mission is to provide financial assistance to formal education programs. We believe in strengthening communities through collaboration, educational equality and sustainable initiatives. Our values are embedded in every project and relationship we build.

Driven by Purpose. Focused on Community. Enduring Impact.

A Letter From Edward St. John

In the following pages, you’ll experience some examples of how our philanthropy has helped facilitate collaborations between organizations, set new standards of learning and teaching and advance medical research. We constantly challenge and inspire others to match our support, serving as a catalyst to multiply our contributions. Another component of our giving is through the Foundation’s matching gift program, which contributes to St. John Properties employees’ charities of choice. In reflecting back since establishing the Edward St. John Foundation, I am very proud of our overall philanthropic impact. We look forward to continuing to use our success for the benefit of others.

When I started St. John Properties in 1971, my goal was to build a successful business and to positively impact the world around me. In 1998, the Edward St. John Foundation was founded to strategically target our support and to maximize our philanthropy. Our ability to give back is tied directly to the success of St. John Properties, and is funded by 7.5% of the annual net income of the company. I felt that I could have the greatest influence by focusing on education, based on the belief that education empowers individuals, transforms lives and provides a foundation for success. St. John Properties has grown tremendously. As a result of our success, we have been able to impact over 1,200 institutions and organizations through contributions by the Foundation, St. John Properties and personally, totaling more than $75 million.

Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center at UMD College Park

institution University of Maryland College Park location College Park, Maryland Impact The Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center at the University of Maryland College Park, also known as “The ESJ,” was dedicated in 2017. The 187,000 square-foot facility, which includes 12 classrooms and nine teaching labs with a total of 1,500 seats, elevated collaborative learning on campus. Innovative TERP (Teach, Engage, Respond, Participate) Classroom design features round tables and a tiered structure, allowing students to move seamlessly from lecture to discussion mode and promoting group interaction and problem-solving. This reflects the changing role of faculty from lecturers to becoming more of the facilitators of learning and teaching — creating innovative thinkers and the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The design transforms learning while setting a new standard for campus innovation. The facility is a national model of transforming the classroom experience and shaping the way faculty teach. It was the first building constructed in the center of campus in over 50 years, and serves more than 12,000 students per day. institution University of Maryland Medical Center R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center location Baltimore, Maryland

1

Impact One of the nation's oldest teaching hospitals, University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) provides a full range of comprehensive patient care. UMMC is home to internationally renowned programs including the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC), ranked as a Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC), the highest designation for trauma care worldwide. Nearly 8,000 people are brought to the STC every year, and because of the superior and complex care provided, 97% of patients survive. The Shock Trauma Center Simulation Labs are designed to simulate the flow of patients through the STC. From roadside to recovery, it prepares the general public, physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners for different scenarios encountered at a hospital. The center also serves the U.S. Air Force C-STARS program, training medics for front-line trauma and readiness. The Simulation Labs allow for real-time feedback, identifying problems and correcting them in practice situations — ultimately improving patient care and safety. With a focus on patient safety, the labs provide real-life healthcare settings such as critical care and operation rooms.

2

The Foundation's support helped facilitate collaboration between University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland College Park, creating the Shock Trauma Simulation Center — out of which the Blended Reality Center was born.

The resulting forward-thinking, medical initiatives could not have been possible without this multi-discipline partnership.

In 2020, the Foundation's grant helped Maryland Blended Reality Center (MBRC) develop innovative devices and education modules that use virtual and augmented reality. These immersive tools are being prototyped and tested by MBRC for medical diagnostics, surgical training, non-opioid pain management, the performing arts, and more. New initiatives include expanding efforts of virtual reality tools for surgical education and training, summer internships for immersive technologies for social change, and assisting people with limited mobility to experience new sights and sounds that previously might have been inaccessible, while simultaneously reducing their use of opioids for pain management. The accomplishments of MBRC serve as an example of what can be achieved through collaborations between public research universities and medical centers. The University of Maryland College Park's College of Computer Mathematics and Natural Sciences is collaborating with the world-renowned trauma center — the UMMC R Cowley Shock Trauma — to achieve tremendous goals and significant outcomes.
