A Letter From Edward St. John
In the following pages, you’ll experience some examples of how our philanthropy has helped facilitate collaborations between organizations, set new standards of learning and teaching and advance medical research. We constantly challenge and inspire others to match our support, serving as a catalyst to multiply our contributions. Another component of our giving is through the Foundation’s matching gift program, which contributes to St. John Properties employees’ charities of choice. In reflecting back since establishing the Edward St. John Foundation, I am very proud of our overall philanthropic impact. We look forward to continuing to use our success for the benefit of others.
When I started St. John Properties in 1971, my goal was to build a successful business and to positively impact the world around me. In 1998, the Edward St. John Foundation was founded to strategically target our support and to maximize our philanthropy. Our ability to give back is tied directly to the success of St. John Properties, and is funded by 7.5% of the annual net income of the company. I felt that I could have the greatest influence by focusing on education, based on the belief that education empowers individuals, transforms lives and provides a foundation for success. St. John Properties has grown tremendously. As a result of our success, we have been able to impact over 1,200 institutions and organizations through contributions by the Foundation, St. John Properties and personally, totaling more than $75 million.
