Impact One of the nation's oldest teaching hospitals, University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) provides a full range of comprehensive patient care. UMMC is home to internationally renowned programs including the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC), ranked as a Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC), the highest designation for trauma care worldwide. Nearly 8,000 people are brought to the STC every year, and because of the superior and complex care provided, 97% of patients survive. The Shock Trauma Center Simulation Labs are designed to simulate the flow of patients through the STC. From roadside to recovery, it prepares the general public, physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners for different scenarios encountered at a hospital. The center also serves the U.S. Air Force C-STARS program, training medics for front-line trauma and readiness. The Simulation Labs allow for real-time feedback, identifying problems and correcting them in practice situations — ultimately improving patient care and safety. With a focus on patient safety, the labs provide real-life healthcare settings such as critical care and operation rooms.

The Foundation's support helped facilitate collaboration between University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland College Park, creating the Shock Trauma Simulation Center — out of which the Blended Reality Center was born.
The resulting forward-thinking, medical initiatives could not have been possible without this multi-discipline partnership.
The intensive care unit (ICU) simulation lab is laid out much like a standard ICU room in the Shock Trauma Critical Care Tower. The Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU) receives patients entering the Shock Trauma Center of the University of Maryland Medical Center. 1 2
