GETTING TO KNOW MY PATIENTS IS ESSENTIAL MY PURSUIT OF A DENTAL CAREER
When we were teens, Kyle and I used to laugh about the idea of becoming dentists and working together, and now that’s a reality! The fact that it actually happened is mind-blowing, especially when considering I decided my career at 14. In high school, I was in a program where I shadowed several different dentists. My enthusiasm for the profession grew through the combined efforts of all the dentists I had the opportunity to shadow. It was these dentists, my uncle, and Dr. Takacs that were the biggest influences in my career. Dr. Takacs and my uncle always put in the effort to get to know the people who sat in the chair. I’ve seen Dr. Takacs and her patients laughing and chatting together about their families many times. That’s just one of the aspects I love so much about working at and being a part of Beaumont Family Dentistry. It’s been a lot of fun getting established here over the past five years, both getting to know the team that I’m a part of and growing close to my patients. Some patients who I first treated while they were in elementary school are now starting high school, and it’s really amazing to be a part of that longevity. I sometimes marvel aloud whenever I see one of their old pictures and say to them, “Look how much you’ve grown!”
Growing up, I knew I wanted to be involved in the health care industry. I wanted to work with people, and dentistry always seemed the most interesting field. My uncle was my family dentist, and we were always really excited to see him for our dental appointments. Watching him, I saw how much he enjoyed his work, and that inspired me to pursue a dentistry career. When I was in high school, around 14 years old, I played soccer with Kyle Golibersuch and met the rest of her family, who became something like my second family. Most of my summers were spent at their house, and we used to joke that I lived there because of how often I was with them. Dr. Trish Takacs and her husband were like other parents to me, and Kyle and Ryan were like my sister and brother. One of the most inspiring aspects of spending time with them was having the chance to watch Dr. Trish Takacs as she balanced her family and career. Being a woman, it intrigued me that Dr. Takacs not only had a big professional career she was successfully navigating but that she also attended every soccer game that Kyle and I had, on top of driving us all over the place on weekends. By watching her, I realized I could pursue a health care profession as well as start a family.
Creating that sort of atmosphere is really what makes Beaumont Family Dentistry so special. I’ve known Kyle and her family for a long time, and working with them alongside all of our wonderful patients is exactly like being with family. Everyone has been so wonderful here. CONSECUTIVE YEAR THE LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER READERS’ CHOICE AWARD Everyone at Beaumont Family Dentistry wants to thank the local residents of Lexington who have named our practice the Best Dental Office for the sixth year in a row! Every year, the Lexington Herald-Leader hosts a Readers’ Choice Award. The community is encouraged to vote on their favorite services that they’ve had the best experiences with. They have a number of choices, including shopping and entertainment, pet care, auto repair, real estate, and health and fitness. Earlier this year, between May 1–15, people nominated any business they wanted to. The top qualifiers from these nominations moved into a final voting period, which lasted from May 26 through June 9. The votes were tallied, and the award winners of each category were announced on Aug. 4. Our team is honored and humbled that, since 2014, the Lexington community has recognized, nominated, and voted Beaumont Family Dentistry the best dental practice. It means more to us than words can describe to receive such praise from the local residents here. Our team is dedicated to ensuring each of our patients is cared for and knows they will receive help when they come into any of our offices.
School is back in session, but your child may be bringing home more than just random facts. Germs and bacteria that spread the common cold and flu are most prevalent in schools, but while these illnesses are strong, prevention is simple. Teach your kids how to prevent the spread of bacteria this season with these helpful tips. BUT MOMMY DOESN’T COVER HER NOSE! Kids learn more by watching what you do rather than listening to what you tell them to do. Get in the habit of covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and then wash your hands. Make hand sanitizer and facial tissues readily available in your home and be sure to wash your hands before every meal. In addition, stick to healthy habits when you do feel sick. Drink fluids, get plenty of rest, and seek medical attention when it’s warranted. If your children see you taking care of yourself, they will be more likely to do the same for themselves in the future. AHH ... AHH ... ACHOO! Hand washing and nose blowing are about as fun as … well, just that. It’s no wonder children don’t want to take time out of their busy play schedules to combat nasty germs. Instead of making these important steps a chore, make basic hygiene fun. Use fun songs to teach the proper way to cover a sneeze, or do a science experiment to teach your children about the germs that are spread through just one sneeze. (According to research, sneezes can travel anywhere from 19–26 feet at 100 miles per hour!) For crafty kids, let them decorate tissue boxes or hand sanitizer containers to give hygiene some flair. Soon enough, you’ll find them being smarter about their health. As kids pack into classrooms this fall, germs will fly faster than this past summer did. Prevent the spread of the common cold and flu by learning more tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention online at CDC.gov. THE USE OF INTRAORAL CAMERAS
HOW OUR PATIENTS BENEFIT
WHAT ARE INTRAORAL CAMERAS? Intraoral cameras are used to perform quality examinations. The camera looks like a large pen with a camera and light at the end, and it captures detailed images or a live feed of a patient’s mouth in high resolution on a screen both the patient and dentist can view. A patient will experience no discomfort while their dentist examines their mouth by gently moving the pen around to capture images of the teeth and gums from all angles. THE HISTORY BEHIND INTRAORAL CAMERAS Since the 1980s, intraoral cameras have been used in the dentistry field. However, their first design was bulky and took up an excessive amount of space in the office, costing around $40,000 for one unit. As technology advanced, intraoral cameras became more compact and efficient. Their size was drastically reduced, and their price dropped to less than $5,000, allowing dentists across the country to provide their patients with these significant services. THE BENEFITS OF INTRAORAL CAMERAS Dentists can perform a detailed examination of their patient’s mouth, catching hairline fractures,
bleeding gums, or eroded fillings that the human eye can’t see. The camera allows dentists to make a more accurate diagnosis and draft a treatment plan. In addition, dentists can put the captured images or videos in a patient’s records for reference at later appointments. Patients can significantly benefit from these features. Through the use of this device, dentists can better explain what they’re looking at and why they recommend specific treatments. Often, people don’t fully understand what their dentists are talking about, which can create anxiety and fear. With the intraoral camera, patients see exactly what their dentists are seeing, giving them a better understanding and more confidence when making decisions about their oral health. PALEO BREAKFAST CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS
•
2 cups spinach
•
1/2 cup onion, diced
•
1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth (optional: substitute with water)
•
1 red pepper, diced
•
2 strips bacon, cut into squares
•
1 tsp paprika
•
1 large sweet potato, spiralized or grated
•
6 eggs
•
2 cloves garlic, minced
•
Salt and pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 375 F. 2. In a large pan over medium heat, sauté onion, peppers, bacon, and sweet potatoes until bacon is completely rendered and onions are translucent. Then, add garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes. Finally, add spinach and continue cooking for another 3–5 minutes. 3. Transfer to a greased casserole dish. 4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs and pour them over casserole. 5. Bake for 20–30 minutes, let stand for 5 minutes, and serve.

handlers. It wasn’t uncommon for handlers to stage mock “findings” of survivors to keep the dogs’ spirits up. Fortunately, the sacrifices these dogs and their handlers made did not go unnoticed. Many dog owners were inspired to earn their search and rescue certifications after the events of 9/11, promising to aid in future disasters and hopefully lessen the impact of such catastrophes. After 9/11, various researchers conducted many studies examining the effect this kind of work has on animals, both physically and mentally. Dogs of all breeds and backgrounds, including search and rescue dogs, police dogs, service dogs, and therapy dogs, were brought in to help find and care for survivors in the wake of the destruction. They worked tirelessly alongside rescue crews as they searched through the debris. Search and rescue dogs and their handlers worked 12–16-hour days, searching for survivors and victims. They worked through dangerous conditions: Many dogs burned their paws as they dug through hot rubble, and both handlers and canines inhaled toxic dust. The task was both physically and mentally exhausting for the dogs during their shifts. Some dogs that found deceased victims refused to eat or interact with other animals. Search and rescue dogs became increasingly stressed and depressed the longer they searched without any results, mirroring their
In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets to clear rubble, offer supplies, and search for survivors. It was a powerful act of resilience in a deeply trying time, and while most of the individuals helping with the disaster stood on two feet, more than 300 canines also answered the call to service.
