Appendix 8-1
North Carolina’s Wildlife Action Plan (WAP, Plan) identifies numerous wildlife and habitat conservation priorities that will benefit species of greatest conservation need (SGCN). A new online search tool makes it easier to find the conservation recom - mendations that are most needed for declining species, like the Ornate Chorus Frog and the Eastern Tiger Salamander.
The search tool makes finding priority conservation recommendations in the WAP much easier. You will find a link to the search tool on the WAP web site www.ncwildlife.org/Plan. You can select from several search options and can save the results using the download option. The tool was developed by the Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC) to help partners discover priorities for species and habitat conservation actions. The priorities for conservation action were developed through input and collaboration by partners during the revision efforts for the 2015 Plan. A search for amphibian conservation priorities will show there is a need for habitat protection. For example, amphibian species need both terrestrial and wetland
or aquatic habitats to thrive, especially small wetlands and headwater streams that are necessary for breeding and reproduction. One conservation priority is to control invasive species in degraded wetland systems and to restore native vegetation. Another priority is to protect wetland habitats, especially seasonal wetlands and riparian zones, and maintain habitat connectivity with the surrounding upland habitats.
The WRC has recently started the next 10-year revision process. Regional workshops are being planned to provide opportunities for all interested partners, organizations, and individuals to participate in revising the Plan. The first workshops will focus on climate adaptation topics that will help identify conservation priorities to guide manage - ment of wildlife and important habitats. Visit www.ncwildlife.org/Plan for more information about North Carolina’s Wildlife Action Plan and opportunities to participate during the revision process.
