Chapter 4 Habitats
Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats
• Control tide water penetration and saltwater intrusion with tide gates where feasible.
• Where fire cannot be introduced back into the site for smoke management or other reasons, the use of a hydro-ax or other chipping machinery should be considered to control midstory.
4.3.9.6.5 Conservation Programs and Partnerships Conservation programs, incentives, and partnerships should be fully used to preserve high- quality resources and protect important natural communities. Protective measures that use existing regulatory frameworks to protect habitats and species should be incorporated where applicable. Land conservation or preservation can serve numerous purposes in the face of anticipated climate change, but above all, it promotes ecosystem resilience. Priority Conservation Action, Examples of Focal Species or Focal Habitats • Site protection and protection of surrounding areas through land acquisition or easements and cooperation with land trusts are urgently needed, as large acreages (>500 acres) are frequently clearcut all at once for agriculture, pine conversion, or development.
• Restoration efforts may be possible in some cases through partnerships with land trusts, The Nature Conservancy, and state and federal agencies.
